Rwanda confirmed as hosts for FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2021 Zone 5 Qualifiers

FIBA Africa, the governing body for Basketball on the continent, has confirmed that Rwanda will host the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2021 Zone 5 Qualifiers.

The 2021 Women AfroBasket will be the 25th edition and will be held from 17th to 26th September 2021 in Yaoundé, Cameroon. In this 12 nation competition, hosts Cameroon alongside the last edition semi-finalists, Nigeria, Senegal, Mali, and Mozambique have automatic qualifications.

The seven more slots will be contested in the regional qualifying tournaments thus Kigali arena will hosts the zone 5 games scheduled from July 12th -17th, 2021.

In a short interview with the FERWABA media office, the Rwanda Basketball Federation President, Mr. Desire Mugwiza expressed his pleasure to host this kind of tournament for the women’s category

“ Hosting this tournament means a lot to Rwanda as we continue the journey to revamp our focus on women’s basketball at the regional and continental levels. We are excited and ready for the challenge.” Said Desire Mugwiza

Rwanda National women’s team has been in a residential camp since last Sunday after completing the BKBNL first leg games.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2021 Zone 5 Qualifiers will be held under strict guidelines by FIBA and Rwanda’s Ministry of Health. Countries that have confirmed participation are Rwanda, Kenya, South Sudan, and Uganda. More countries are expected to confirm their participation.
