CAF Confederation Cup: AS Kigali has been handed 2-0 Win After Walkover against KCCA FC

AS Kigali

The CAF Confederation Cup match between AS Kigali and KCCA FC that was supposed to be played today has been canceled.

The decision comes after Uganda side KCCA has not been able to get the number of players determined by the CAF for the team to be allowed to play the match.

The KCCA arrived in Kigali on Sunday night without their head coach Mike Mutebi and some of the key players including the 3 goalkeepers. The insiders said that the number of players and some other staff members tested positive for COVID-19 and could not travel to Kigali.

Of the 15 KCCA players traveled to Rwanda, two of them were diagnosed and tested positive for COVID-19 last night. CAF rules stipulate that when a team does not have 15 players including a goalkeeper thus failing to play a match, it is penalized by automatically conceding 2 goals, which is why AS Kigali has been handed a 2-0 goal advantage.

KCCA FC has to prepare for the second leg match scheduled at MTN Omondi Stadium on January 6, 2021.

KCCA FC was among the elite teams in CAF Confederation Cup this year that did not play the first preliminary round due to the impressive run they had in past CAF Competitions.

AS Kigali reached this stage after eliminating Orapa United on the away goals rule.  In the first match, the Kigali city-sponsored club lost 2-1 in Botswana then AS Kigali won the second leg 1-0 at Kigali Stadium.  Nigerian striker Aboubakal Lawal scored the lone goal.
