Rwanda Basketball Federation, FERWABA convened a regular annual general assembly meeting. The Assembly approved the launch of the men’s second division league and welcomed two new women’s clubs namely ADEGI Gituza and UR-CMHS.
This GA was held at the Onomo Hotel, chaired by the President of the Federation, Mr. Désiré Mugwiza. On the agenda, the headlines were to enhance the 2021/2022 competitions calendar, the men’s second division league, then confirming the new women’s teams, ADEGI Gituza and UR-CMHS which will debut in first division league.
In the concluded men’s league, the teams that finished in bottom four were relegated to start the second division league. So far, eight more teams have expressed their interest to join the D2 league.
The women’s league was composed of 6 teams while the men’s top tier league will come down from 14 to 10 teams
The Assembly members have decided that from next season, the leagues will run between January and October.
In a press conference to conclude the assembly, the President of the Federation stated that they will face challenges in venues to organize the leagues next season. He said, “Petit Stade, NPC Gymnasium, and Amahoro outdoor courts are about to be renovated. We will work hand in hand with our members to revamp the other existing courts. Some games will be held in Kigali Arena and others will be played on other courts.”
President Mugwiza also announced plans to build new courts. “There are plans to built a multi sport facility in Kimironko. With a collaboration with the Imbuto Foundation, Ministry of Sports, and Kigali City, We shall have a model facility that does not cause injuries to players,” he said.
He added, “In addition to the current project, We promised our members to unveil at least two other modern basketball courts in next general assembly.”
The Patron of Federation informed the media that the deal with their partner, Bank of Kigali had expired however they are in advanced talks to extend the partnership deal.
