A Final Decision On The Stanbic Uganda Cup Has Been Made By Fufa And Sponsors Stanbic Bank Uganda.
In a press conference held today morning at the FUFA headquarters in Mengo, a final decision on the Stanbic Uganda Cup was announced in front of the press.
FUFA has cancelled the 2019/2020 46th edition of the cup after declaring it null and void due to COVID-19 lockdown. The tournament sees big prize money of 40M UGX awarded to the winner, 20M UGX to the runner up, 12M UGX to be shared by the semi-finalists, quarter-finalists sharing 6M UGX and round of 16 teams sharing 3M UGX each.
The Cup was halted at the round of 16 in March 2020 shortly before the lockdown seeing KCCA FC, Kyetume FC, Light SS, Kitara, Kataka, and Proline FC progressed to the quarter-finals. URA vs Wakiso Giants and SC Villa vs Mbarara City fixtures were yet to be played.
Stanbic Bank Head of Marketing and Communications Daniel Ogong, “we were, of course, hopeful that we would be able to conclude the season but in light of the current circumstances, we cannot. The COVID-19 lockdown has shown us the importance of sports in the lives of the community. Sport not only provides employment of thousands of youth it also provides people with joy and entertainment which we have all been missing.”
“Although the season has been cancelled Stanbic Bank will honour the prize money commitment by paying our prize money to the clubs that had reached the round of 16 and quarter-final stage,” Ogong added.
The sponsor will honour it’s a commitment by paying 6M UGX for the quarter-finalists, 3M UGX round of 16 and the teams that were yet to play their round of 16 1.5M UGX each
