A 17-man preliminary roster including Jean Jacques Boissy for the Senegalese men’s national team led by coach Boniface Ndong has been revealed. The roster will be in a training camp at Marius Ndiaye Stadium to prepare for the AfroBasket games scheduled next month in Kigali, Rwanda.
Former UGB player Jean Jacques Boissy, 21 years old, standing at 1.88 m, a product of NBA Africa, who captained the Senegalese team that finished second in the 2018 FIBA U-18 African Championship before representing Senegal in the 2019 FIBA U-19 World Cup in Greece alongside NBA duo Tacko Fall and Gorgui Dieng were summoned to the preselection roster.
Following a stellar performance in the 2018 U-18 African Championship in Bamako, Boissy came to Rwanda and played for the Patriots for a short time before joining United Generation Basketball, UGB, a team that was dominated by youngsters which same players also represented Rwanda in the U-18 African Championship. He later went back to his native country. Boissy currently plays for SIBAC Dakar.
Among 17 players called by head coach Boniface Ndong, 7 players ply their trade in Europe while 6 of them play in the local league.
Alkali Ndour, Cheikh Diallo, Louis Adams, Mamadou Faye were also summoned. These players were in AS Douanes squad that finished in the last eight of the inaugural BAL season
Makhtar Gueye is another inclusion of this roster that will be a threat in the 2021 AfroBasket. Gueye, 2.08m forward is expected to bring in an abundance of quality to the roster. Meanwhile, Maurice Ndour who missed the first round of qualifiers in Rwanda due to Covid-19 is summoned to the squad that practices at Marius Ndiaye stadium.
Boniface Ndong has also mentioned of a mini tournament in Dakar at the beginning of next month August to complete the preparation. Guinea, Rwanda, and Kenya should take part. However, no confirmation has yet been made.
2021 AfroBasket is scheduled between August 24 and September 5, 2021, in Kigali. Senegal is pitted in Group D alongside Cameroon, South Sudan and Uganda. The first Senegal game will be against Uganda on 25 August, 2021
