Gianni Infantino, a Swiss-Italian, is re-elected as FIFA president for another four years after standing unopposed at the FIFA congress held in Kigali, Rwanda.
Gianni Infantino was re-elected to continue leading FIFA through the 2027 at the organization’s 73rd Congress on Thursday in the Rwandan city of Kigali. At the assembly convened in the BK Arena on March 16, 2023, he is chosen by unanimous vote.
Following the departure of his predecessor Sepp Blatter in 2016, Gianni Infantino was chosen at an Extraordinary Congress to take over. Three years later, he was re-elected without opposition.
However, since this is regarded as his second tenure in organization, he will be eligible for a third and final term in four years. According to FIFA rules, this indicates that he can continue to govern until 2031.
The men’s World Cup will feature 48 teams from the usual 32 for the following tournament in North America in 2026, Infantino reiterated after being reappointed, while the women’s World Cup will feature 32 teams for the first time later this year in Australia and New Zealand.
The occasion occurs a day after the government of Rwanda chose to rename Kigali Stadium in honor of the late Brazilian star Péle. President Paul Kagame’s presence at the event was a blessing.
