Rwanda National Volleyball Team’s longest-serving player and former captain, Lawrence Yakan Guma returns to his former club, Gisagara Volleyball Club as head coach.
“We are thrilled to announce the legend Lawrence Yakan Guma as our new head coach,” the club states on Twitter. We see the former Gisagara VC player signing what appears to be a contract.
Lawrence Yakan Guma is no stranger to this post; before to Gisagara VC, he led Uganda National Volleyball League reigning champions, OBB VC to their NVL title shortly after promotion to Uganda’s top-flight volleyball in 2022.
His time with OBB was brief, as he was only there for a year before being released in September following a defeat to renowned team Sport-S in the National Club Championships.
Lawrence Yakan Guma replaces Fidel Nyirimana, who resigned from the club for personal reasons. We should also mention that the club sacked its president following Fidel Nyirimana’s resignation but immediately reinstated him 24 hours later.
Yakan, who was born in Uganda but represented Rwanda at the international level, is charged with restoring the club to its previous glory. Fidel Nyirimana’s Gisagara finished third in the African Club Championship last year, an accomplishment Lawrence should seek to match.
