KIMISAGARA, March 30, the second leg of the Rwanda Women’s Volleyball National League tipped off with an eagerly anticipated matchup between the leading and second-placed teams from the first leg. A newly established derby in Rwanda Women’s Volleyball League between Army team and the cops.
APR Women Volleyball Club led the standings after the first leg with four victories out of five matches, with their only defeat inflicted by Police. They entered this game with a firm determination to avenge that defeat and maintain their position at the top of the standings.
A Christian Hatumimana-coached side, Police WVC, without Catherine Ainambabazi, struggled to keep pace with a determined APR squad led by Benitha Mukandayisenga, Valentine Munezero, and Seraphine Mukantambara. They were defeated in straight sets (25-17, 25-22, 25-23) in a one-sided affair that concluded earlier than expected for such anticipated derbies.
Earlier at the same venue, the RRA team, resting some of their key players, emerged victorious over East Africa University Rwanda in a four-set match. Ruhango also secured a win over IPRC Kigali in a 3-0 set match that began at 9 am.

On March 29th at the LDK Gymnasium, the APR Women’s Basketball Club defeated REG WBBC in the Rwanda Basketball League, extending their winning streak to six games and handing REG their first loss of the season. Meanwhile, the APR men’s team also secured a victory against REG BBC, improving their winning record to 8-1.
Assouma Uwizeye’s outstanding double-double performance led APR to a victory over REG in overtime, with 20 points and 21 rebounds. This win solidified APR’s dominance in the paint, securing their position as the only undefeated team in the Rwanda Women’s Basketball League.
Uwizeye’s APR dominated the paint, outscoring REG 46 points to 16. Their frontcourt superiority was evident throughout the game. However, despite their control of the paint, APR had to wait until overtime to capitalize on their opponent’s challenges.
In the crucial moments of overtime, REG faced setbacks as Ange Nelly Irakoze was sidelined due to injury and Nandy Linda Uwitonze fouled out just three minutes into the extra time.

Despite the back-and-forth nature of the game, it was APR who ultimately emerged victorious, securing the win and improving their winning ratio to 8-1.
APR emerged victorious against REG, largely due to their bench strength. APR’s bench players contributed 39 points, whereas REG BBC managed only 13 points from their bench.
With the departure of captain Michael Andre Dixon, Wilson Nshobozwabyosenumukiza seized the opportunity for more playing time and made the most of it by scoring a team-high 19 points.

On a Sunday afternoon at Notre Dame des Anges, volleyball enthusiasts savored the excitement of the first security derby of the 2024 Rwanda National Volleyball League season. The match brimmed with intense rallies and dynamic momentum swings, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats throughout.
In the first set, the score remained tight until reaching ten points, after which Police managed to secure five successive points, leading to APR’s Sam Mulingye calling a timeout.
APR’s strategic timeout proved effective, with Prince Kanamugire delivering consecutive blocks to narrow the deficit to two points, prompting Fred Musoni to call a timeout at 16-14.
Following the timeout, Police maintained a two-point lead until reaching 22 points and ultimately clinched the set with a score of 25-23.
Similar to the first set, the second set saw a closely contested battle until reaching 10 points, before APR gained a four-point advantage (14-10) thanks to Theoneste Rwahama’s blocks. Despite Fred Musoni’s attempt to halt APR’s momentum with a timeout, his strategies proved ineffective as APR continued to dominate, scoring eight consecutive points.
In a bid to adjust tactics, Fred Musoni’s team called for another timeout, managing to narrow the gap to two points at set point. However, Venuste Gatsinzi’s decisive kill leveled the set score at 1, with a score of 25-22.

KIGALI, March 15, The Patriots Basketball Club claimed victory over REG BBC, adding two crucial points to their tally, stretching their winning streak to six games, and showcasing their superiority over their rivals.
The match began with high intensity and physicality, as Charles Mushumba’s team employed a man-to-man defense strategy against Patriots. Nevertheless, Herve Icyishatse effectively countered the Patriots’ dynamic point guard, William Kiah Perry.
The American point guard assumed control of the Patriots’ offense as usual, maintaining their customary rhythm and tactics throughout the game.
Mushumba swiftly understood that the approach wouldn’t be effective against the agile Patriots, especially since both point guards, Benjamin Mukengerwa and Antino Alvalezes Jackson, began the game on the bench.

This prompted their scouts to travel to Eastern Europe in search of Serbian Center Nikola Scekic to match REG’s formidable big man, Pitchou Manga, in the paint.

Angola won the right to host the 31st edition of FIBA AfroBasket’s final phase scheduled in August of next year. Angola was vying with Morocco and Egypt to host Africa’s top senior men’s basketball tournament.
Having successfully hosted the 2023 FIBA AfroCan, Angola was granted the rights to host the 2025 men’s AfroBasket, beating out Morocco and Egypt.
Angola, one of African countries with numerous sophisticated basketball facilities, will host a 16-country showcase to decide Tunisia’s successor in the next four years. And, unlike the previous edition held in Rwanda, Angola wants to stage the basketball extravaganza in various cities.
Huíla and Benguela cities can host the preliminary phase of 31st African Cup of Nations, AfroBasket in 2025, as they did in 2007.
Prior to the final tournament, The qualifiers to decide the 16 teams for next year’s main competition are underway.
The 20 teams are split into five groups of four teams each. Each team will play each opponent in its group twice in a tournament format over three windows: 19-27 February 2024, 18-26 November 2024, and 17-25 February 2025.
After the qualifiers, three top teams from each group, together with the host country Angola, will compete in the 2025 AfroBasket final phase.
Angola belongs to group E, along with Tunisia, Kenya, and Guinea, and all members of this group are likely to make it to Luanda.
Angola has previously hosted the competition three times, in 1989, 1999, and 2007, with the Parancas Negras winning all three. The 11-time winners and record holders will vie for the title, they last won in Abidjan in 2013.

Kigali, March 6, APR Basketball Club showcased overwhelming depth in a decisive win over United Generation Basketball, 84-62, handing them their second loss of the season. Pitchou Manga, on the other side, had a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds, propelling REG BBC extend their winning streak to five games.
Maz Trakh’s APR started the game a little sluggish, with numerous turnovers, limiting their scoring prowess.
APR made 12 of 36 field goals, including 2 of 16 behind-the-arc shots in the first half, but they still had an edge over a short-handed UGB, which was missing injured Amissi Saidi and Jean Marie Rukerimbere. They went into break with a 9-point lead (17-15, 21-14).
After the break, Adonis Filer, who had only 5 points in the first two quarters, assumed command of the APR offense. He scored 19 points in the second half to lead the defending champions to a well-deserved win over UGB.
