AS Kigali remained in 2nd place with 24 points, APR FC moved to 3rd place with 21 points, tied with fourth Kiyovu. Rayon Sports are 4 points clear at the top of the RPL table, and 7 points ahead of their arch-rivals APR FC.

Trailing 2-0 at the break, Kiyovu’s Alain André Landeut made a change with Khamis Bizimana taken off and replaced by Riyaad Norodien. The latter brought in some pace and thanks to the chances he created, Mugenzi found the back of the nets for the fourth and fifth time this season.

NVL: Could the National Volleyball League return to Lugogo’s MTN Arena?

NVL
Saturday, November 12th, several NVL games were played at MTN Arena, with the biggest game of the day being UCU against OBB, in which a 3-2 setback surprised the defending champions.

MTN Arena Lugogo is the focal point for a variety of indoor sports in the country, with basketball reaping significant benefits from hosting the National Basketball League, NBL there. The most recent NBL league playoffs produced possibly the largest turnout for a league final.

In 2019, the NVL was mostly played outdoors at Sport-S grounds, UCU grounds, and Nkumba grounds. To cap off the league, UVF held the league playoffs at the MTN Arena Lugogo.

COVID-19 lockdown halted all contact sports for nearly two years. The NVL returned in 2021-2022, with 80% of regular league matches held at the newly constructed Old Kampala Sports Arena.

Fans expected the season playoffs to be held at the MTN Arena, but the federation decided it had no choice but to stay at Old Kampala because the Lugogo venue was fully booked on scheduled match days.

The 2022/2023 season saw a large turnout at the league launch. Ndejje University shared the spoils with Nemo Stars in a 3-2 win for the former, with Sport-S’ 3-0 victory over defending champions OBB drawing the most attention.

The league returned to the Old Kampala Sports Arena, but not for long; week 8 fixtures were held last Saturday at the MTN Arena in Lugogo. Does this imply that fans will watch league games at this venue regularly?

According to a post on the official Uganda Volleyball Federation Twitter page, the Minister of State for Education and Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, paid a visit to the federation at their offices at Unicalo Building and discussed matters pertaining to the fair distribution of time to all indoor sports federations in the utilization of the MTN Arena.

The visit took place about three weeks ago, just before matches at the MTN Arena. The return of the National Volleyball League to Lugogo will delight fans because the venue is strategically located in Kampala’s sports hub.

Despite being pleased with the achievement, the chairperson didn’t hesitate to include the neighborhood in continuing to build an inclusive atmosphere that empowers those with intellectual disabilities.

“We still have to continue campaigning for parents, families, and governmental institutions to take part in the inclusive policy and build an environment that allows people with Intellectual disabilities to feel included,” Pastor Sangwa continued.

The Saturday competitions allowed people with intellectual disabilities to interact with people without mental impairments while showcasing their talents, abilities, and commitment.

In the men’s 100-meter race, Fabrice Niyibeshaho, a competitor from the Kayonza District, finished in second place. He wasn’t satisfied, therefore his dedication drove him to set a target for the upcoming games.

“I did the 100 meters race; I am glad I emerged in the 2nd place but I believe that if I keep training, I will get first place. My parents help me even though it’s hard but I will make it,” said Niyibeshaho, a Senior 4 student at Groupe Scolaire Kayonza.

“It is really amazing. We appreciate the work done by their mentors and coaches, and we are grateful to the children.”

The Burundian club was superior in all aspects of the game and deserved their 25-point victory in the end.

“I feel good about my contribution. I thank my team, we were all focused on the game and everyone gave their best,” said Landry.

Landry’s next game today will be against his previous Ugandan team, City Oilers. For numerous years, the center helped the Oilers win championships. The Oilers also had their first game against Zambia’s Matero Magic.

The Oilers defeated Matero Magic brilliantly, winning 90-51. This result puts them and Urunani among the favorites to advance to the Elite 16 round of this Group C qualification.

Vashon Roebuck from the United States led the scoring with 26 points, while Sudanese center Maker Maker (14) and shooting guard Tony Drileba (13) also helped to the Oilers’ victory.

Will The City Oilers Advance Past The Elite Round In This Year’s BAL?

City Oilers
After failures in earlier iterations of this competition, the City Oilers have yet to overcome the Elite Round curse.

City Oilers participated in the inaugural BAL in 2019 and made it beyond the Road To BAL round, but they were unable to continue past the Elite Round after defeats to Maputo of Mozambique and the Patriots of Rwanda.

Similar events happened in the edition following the first season, however, this time the Ugandan representative lost in the Elite Round because of COVID-19 instances in the camp.

The National Basketball League champion Oilers entered these qualifiers after defeating the Nam Blazers in a grueling game-seven series to win the league for the eighth consecutive season.

“The recent playoffs provided us with the best training. All individuals are in good physical condition. However, it left us with a few wounds and exhausted bodies. However, the players will still play through it,” according to Oilers Coach Mande Juruni.

Originally, Uganda was scheduled to host and City Oilers hoped to benefit from home advantage by competing in front of a home crowd and at a familiar location during Group C Road to BAL Qualifiers, but regrettably, Tanzania acquired the hosting rights.

In order to enter this tournament prepared and to give it our all, the team’s captain, James Okello, stated, “We have been practicing and the finals we played back home prepared us extremely well.”

Jimmy Enabu, an important point guard who suffered an injury during the playoffs, is not with the team that traveled to Dar es Salaam but the side has since added Trey Petty and Roebuck Germaine to the lineup.

The Oilers can win the qualifying round, according to Okello. His assurance is a result of how the just-announced national league champions won their championship.

City Oilers’ first game will be against Zambia’s Matero Magic on Friday, followed by a match against Burundi’s Urunani the following day. On Sunday, the Ugandan club will end its Road To BAL campaign against the host’s Army Basketball Club.
