Simon Msuva scored a second half goal to secure a 1-0 win for Tanzania against their neighboors Uganda in 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier played in Suez Canal Stadium in Egypt.

Tanzania’s hopes of qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations are increasing after the Taifa Stars shocked their rivals Uganda by a score of 1-0 on Friday. The East Africans were split apart by Simon Msuva’s goal in the 68th minute, adding to the agony for Milutin Micho Sredojovic’s squad, who remain at the bottom of Group F with only one point after three games.

There is no doubt that coach Micho is under huge pressure. After losing 2-0 to Algeria away in Alger, drawing with Niger at home, and a loss to Tanzania, the Cranes’ performance in this continuing competition has yet to improve.

They travel to Dar es salaam for a second leg encounter on Tuesday, March 28 at Mkapa International Stadium

Uganda is still in last position with only one point, three points behind second-placed Tanzania and one point behind third-placed Niger. Algeria is the Group leader with 9 points.

Coach Micho and Adel Amrouche chose to set up their lineups in this way

Uganda XI: Salim Jamal, Kenneth Ssemakula, Aziz Kayondo, Halid Lwaliwa, Livingstone Mulondo, Khalid Aucho, Siraje Ssentamu, Farouk Miya, Joseph Ochaya, Emmanuel Arnold Okwi, Fahad Bayo

Tanzania XI: Aishi Manula, Dickson Job, Novatus Dismas, Bakari Mwamnyeto, Ibrahim Bacca, Himid Mao, Yassin Mzamiru, Mudathir Yahya, Said Khamis, Mbwana Samatta (C), and Simon Msuva

Rwanda got a point away from home against Benin on Wednesday, 22 March at Stade de l’Amitié Général Mathieu Kérékou. The Amavubi were down to 10 men in the second half but managed to hold out for a point.

Thirteen minutes after the game’s opening kickoff, Hakim Sahabo’s incredible pass allowed Mugisha to score the first goal of the match. The 82nd-minute goal by Steve Mounie, who came on as a substitute, canceled out Gilbert Mugisha’s opening goal in a game that was entirely controlled by the home team.

Hakim Sahabo’s dismissal left Rwanda with 10 men for the last 30 minutes of play.

On March 27, 2023, Rwanda and Benin will compete in the second leg. It was scheduled to take place in Cotonou, Benin, according to the Confederation of African Football, but Rwanda submitted an appeal that hasn’t yet been taken into account.

Senegal tops the Group L of the 2023 African Cup of Nations with six points, followed by Mozambique with four points, and Rwanda in third position with two out of a possible nine points. Benin is currently at the bottom of the table with one point.

This is how both teams lined up

Benin: Saturnin Allagbe, Cedric Hountondji, Khaled Adenon, Olivier Verdon, David Kiki, Imourane Hassane, Junior Olaitan Ishola, Mattéo Ahlinvi, Jordan Adeoti, Jodel Dossou, and Tosin Aiyegun

Rwanda Energy Group Basketball Club, REG BBC finishes the 2023 BAL Sahara Conference in third position while the reigning champions US Monastrienne are out after losing their final game to AS Douanes 76-60. Stade Malien was crowned champions.

Prior to the last day, US Monastir had won three of four games and believed to have secured a playoff spot. However, head-to-head points differential determined the outcome since five of the six teams, including Monastir, ended with three victories and two defeats. Because of their close score margins, US Monastrienne, the defending champions got eliminated from contention.

March 21, 2023, in Dakar Arena, The Senegalese representative took over US Monastrienne 76-60 during their last outing in the Sahara Conference. The defending champions, US Monastir needed to beat AS Douanes to qualify or lose by less than ten points.

The hosts were super motivated in front of their home supporters and AS Douanes’ Chris Crawford showed no mercy to his former club by dropping 28 points in the win. Thus, AS Douanes will be part of the Final 8 of the Basketball Africa League.

ABC Fighters of Côte d’Ivoire, Stade Malien of Mali, and REG of Rwanda joined AS Douanes as the other 3 clubs to make it to the playoffs. The remaining four teams will be determined at the Nile Conference in Cairo.

Stade Malien tops the 2023 Basketball Africa League Sahara Conference following a well-deserved 90-71 against ABC Fighters. The Malians ended the campaign on a high note as they beat REG BBC, the 2022 Sahara Conference winners, and overcome ABC Fighters on the last day to shock the whole conference. Stade Malien was lagging in fifth position before the final day.

Souleymane Berthé was outstanding in this conference’s games as he averaged 20.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.8 steals. He was Stade Malien’s lead scorer and his immense contribution helped his team not only to qualify but also win the conference.

Now the focus has turned from Dakar to Cairo where the six Nile Conference clubs will be vying for their playoff spots.

Eight teams from Sahara and Nile Conferences will compete in a single-elimination Playoffs and Final with the winner crowned the third BAL champion.

The 2023 playoffs will be played in Kigali’s BK Arena from May 21–27.

UCU Reiterate Argument To Mighty Sport-S

UCU
To complete the regular season and show other playoff candidates that they are a force to be reckoned with, UCU ends the undefeated streak of superpower Sport-S.

One would assume that the games had just begun as the National Volleyball League’s 2022/2023 regular season comes to an end. Prior to the match, playoff berths had already been determined, but UCU was out to prove a point to Nsambya base side Sport-S.

A record that has only been attained by a few teams for stance, Nemostars, the S-Team had gone the full regular season without suffering a loss. To put the cherry on top, UCU chose to defeat the Nsambya boys 3–1 at Old Kampala Sports Arena, dashing their aspirations.

Odeke Vincent’s stunning block allowed the Mukono-based University team to score first. Yet Sport-S led and dominated the entire set to win it 25-22 under the direction of coach Benon Mugisha.

At 24-20 and 24-22 in this set, the University boys were down but managed to close the distance, prompting Coach Benon to call two timeouts.

In set 2, the Nsambya boys were in the lead once more until 18:18, when UCU tied and gained the lead, which resulted in the subsequent tying of the set scores. The scores were reversed at the end of the set, favoring UCU 25–22.

Sport-S, who had been considered the match’s favorite to win, learned they had to work harder than they had anticipated at this point. Warren had to intervene to try to shift the mood for his team, but he was unable to do so successfully enough to affect the game’s outcome.

A younger side, UCU went on to win the match 3 – 1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-18).

Gianni Infantino has been re-elected as president of FIFA
Gianni Infantino, a Swiss-Italian, is re-elected as FIFA president for another four years after standing unopposed at the FIFA congress held in Kigali, Rwanda.

Gianni Infantino was re-elected to continue leading FIFA through the 2027 at the organization’s 73rd Congress on Thursday in the Rwandan city of Kigali. At the assembly convened in the BK Arena on March 16, 2023, he is chosen by unanimous vote.

BK Arena has achieved another milestone by hosting FIFA Congress

Following the departure of his predecessor Sepp Blatter in 2016, Gianni Infantino was chosen at an Extraordinary Congress to take over. Three years later, he was re-elected without opposition.

However, since this is regarded as his second tenure in organization, he will be eligible for a third and final term in four years. According to FIFA rules, this indicates that he can continue to govern until 2031.

The men’s World Cup will feature 48 teams from the usual 32 for the following tournament in North America in 2026, Infantino reiterated after being reappointed, while the women’s World Cup will feature 32 teams for the first time later this year in Australia and New Zealand.

The occasion occurs a day after the government of Rwanda chose to rename Kigali Stadium in honor of the late Brazilian star Péle. President Paul Kagame’s presence at the event was a blessing.

Rwanda National Volleyball Team’s longest-serving player and former captain, Lawrence Yakan Guma returns to his former club, Gisagara Volleyball Club as head coach.

“We are thrilled to announce the legend Lawrence Yakan Guma as our new head coach,” the club states on Twitter. We see the former Gisagara VC player signing what appears to be a contract.

Lawrence Yakan Guma is no stranger to this post; before to Gisagara VC, he led Uganda National Volleyball League reigning champions, OBB VC to their NVL title shortly after promotion to Uganda’s top-flight volleyball in 2022.

His time with OBB was brief, as he was only there for a year before being released in September following a defeat to renowned team Sport-S in the National Club Championships.

Lawrence Yakan Guma replaces Fidel Nyirimana, who resigned from the club for personal reasons. We should also mention that the club sacked its president following Fidel Nyirimana’s resignation but immediately reinstated him 24 hours later.

Yakan, who was born in Uganda but represented Rwanda at the international level, is charged with restoring the club to its previous glory. Fidel Nyirimana’s Gisagara finished third in the African Club Championship last year, an accomplishment Lawrence should seek to match.

DAKAR – With a decisive victory over Abidjan Basket Club Fighters in Dakar Arena, Rwanda’s national team moved one step closer to winning a playoff position in the Sahara Conference, where the competition for the playoffs slots appears to be tight.

Having trailed by 7 points at the break (17-20, 20-24), Dean Murray’s REG came all the way back to take the last two quarters (26-18, 17-11) and won the game 80-73.

It was REG’s second win in two games and today, they will rub shoulders with host AS Douanes.

If they overcome AS Douanes, a spot in the playoffs will be guaranteed. The country and the management of the club, though, have their expectations set higher than what was achieved last season.

For the third consecutive season, Basketball Africa League Playoffs will be held in BK Arena, Kigali from 21-27 May 2023.

Eight teams from Sahara and Nile Conferences will compete in a single-elimination Playoffs and Final with the winner crowned the third BAL champion. US Monastir are defending champions
