Espoir FC defeated Marines 1-0 at Umuganda Stadium in a postponed match of day 13. Fiston Ishimwe misses a penalty that would have put Marines level.

In a match of the 13th round of the Rwanda Premier League, which was postponed from January 18, 2022, for the reasons related to covid 19, Marines FC, at their home stadium failed to score for the first time since December 8, 2021, against Mukura VS.

Before this match, Yves Rwasamanzi’s lads were on a winning streak of 4 matches and the team looked so solid at the back with a Chris Rushema and Jean De Dieu Hirwa partnership that kept 3 clean sheets in their last 3 matches.

In the game, Marines should have taken the lead in the 15th minute however, the striker Nzungu Mfitumukiza missed a clear cut chance. a killer through pass from Maestro Fiston Ishimwe.

On the other side, Muhozi who was playing his last game for Espoir tried to use his pace down the wings but he was not clinical as usual. Thus a goalless draw at the break.

At the 69th minute of the game, Yves Habimana netted the only goal of the match to hand the visitors a well-needed victory. He scored 8 minutes after coming on as a substitute for Fred Muhozi.

12 minutes later, Olivier Nshimiyimana was brought down in the box but Marines missed the chance to draw level with a penalty of their own. Fiston Ishimwe saw his spot-kick hit the woodwork. He would have scored his 6th goal of the season.

Today’s win helped Mousa Gatera and Espoir finish the first leg in the top 10 with 7 points clear to the relegation zone. Marines are in the eighth position.

Second leg matches commence on February 12th.

Due to the heavy downpour in Kigali, the game was interrupted at halftime and as per the rules of the competition, the match had to be resumed in the next 24 hours at the same venue from the time it stopped. The Huye based club, Mukura was leading the army side by 1-0.

A remarkable effort from the yellow and black for having dominated the first half played on January 31 and score a goal, then the defence stood firm in the 45 minutes of the second half paid off to claim not only 3 points of the game, but also the crucial win to mark the end of APR FC unbeaten record in the Rwanda Premier League.

The APR’s streak started under coach Zlatko Krmpotić, on 01 June 2019 with a 2-0 win over Police FC and included their back-to-back title-winning seasons of 2019-20 and 2020-21.

Although Zlatko left in June 2019, the run continued under his replacement Erradi Mohammed Adil from August 2019 to February 2022 to make it 50 (W39 D11).

The last time APR lost a League game was in May 2019, 2-1 to Espoir FC at Kigali Stadium.

Mukura can proudly say that they are the only team to stop APR in the Rwandan league since 2019. They will kick off the second leg matches under the stewardship of Tonny Hernandez who was in the stands observing and encouraging the lads led by the interim coach, Canisius Nshimiyimana.

Rayon Sports beat Gasogi United 1-0 at Kigali Stadium in the last match of Rwanda Premier League first leg. Justin Mico scored the all-important goal in the 62nd minute to bag all three points for Rayon Sports. Marc Nkubana scored the equalizer but the referee ruled it as offside. This decision was overwhelming for Gasogi’s president that he declare the withdrawal of the team from the competition with immediate effect.

In a post-match interview, Gasogi United President and club spokesman at the same time, Kakooza Nkuriza Charles known as KNC, said that what he has been experiencing in Rwanda football is unspeakably evil acts which led him to take his team out of the competition.

He said, “the referees did this willingly because I once said that the Referee Commission should resign. These well-orchestrated things prove that the Federation is full of mafias, dirt and so on. We have decided to withdraw our team from this competition with effect from today.

KNC has recently been sentenced by the disciplinary commission to four matches ban for undermining a referee who officiated his side’s 3-2 defeat to the Police FC.

Mutebi’s first game in charge of AS Kigali was against APR FC, the defending champions, and the two sides fought out a 0-0 draw to allow Kiyovu to retain the first spot in Rwanda Premier League

The Ugandan gaffer who was unveiled as AS Kigali head coach three days ago made some changes in tactical formation and start with three at the back compared to 4-3-3 played by previous coaches.

In his post-match interview, Mike Mutebi insisted that his players are still adapting to his tactical approach and promised a bright future.

NVL: Nkumba Give Nemo Stars A Run Their Money

Nkumba Give Nemo Stars A Run Their Money

League title holders, Nemo Stars almost face yet another loss just after one against National Club Championship champions sports.

Playing in the Uganda National Volleyball League is not a matter of winning a match but rather how you win. The criteria to get in a particular position on the league table heavily depends on that final outcome.

For a team like Nemo, a 3-1 or 3-2 win is not something the team needs right now as many other teams a looking to dethrone one of the most successful clubs in the country. Today Nemo started round and their quest for National Volleyball League Playoffs with a 3-2 win against the boys from Nkumba.

This is not a good result for the Stars as potential titles contenders OBB and Sport-S are off to a good one. This does not go to say that the opponents for the above-mentioned teams are of equal strengths. Nonetheless, at this point strategy is key and Nemo Stars need to win the right way.

OBB take advantage of Nemo’s result today to take second place below table leaders Sport-S with all 3 teams having played 3 games.

Nemo Stars today missed the services of the middle attacker, Malinga locally known as Redman who is a key component of the team given his track record. However, the team lined up National Team Captain George Aporu and also had the services of the best setter in Africa Smith Okumu.

Nemo faces KAVC-A next weekend after the latter plays Nkumba tomorrow.

Iganga based side Orange Block Busters, OBB thrash army side Airforce volleyball club as both teams serve off their round 2.

Airforce returns for the National Volleyball League round 2 with very low spirits as they devastatingly lose to OBB 3-0. The Orage Block Busters, OBB on the other hand continue their quest for success as a new top-flight entrant into National Volleyball League Men’s Serie A.

This 3-straight sets win and very huge set points difference is a good result for OBB in terms of criteria for table rankings for the fact that Nemo Stars did not produce the best result against Nkumba. the Orange Block Busters will now pose a threat for Sport-S as they stand in second place waiting for any chance for the latter to lose a game.

A loss for Sport-S will be an added advantage for OBB but this is not something that the boys from Iganga should expect to happen easily. Nevertheless, OBB will have their work cut when they face Nemo and Sport-S. The round 1 encounter against Sport-S did not go in their favour and still again the victory picked from Nemo Stars means the Uganda volleyball will come back better prepared for OBB in round 2.

As for Airforce, It is very clear that with this performance they will most definitely return to the Men’s Serie B. Fellow relegation battlers UCU seem to have put up a better fight against University side Ndejje in the match that ended 3-0 in favour of the latter. Note that the return of Emma Kato from injury is a massive boost in the Ndejje camp.

On the women’s side, league favourites Ndejje Elites continue their unbeaten run with a win against UCU 3-0 in the opening match of round 2.

Prisons A Walk In The Park For Sport-S

Sport-S Volleyball Club Serve-Off their National Volleyball League round 2 with a win against Prisons VolleyballClub at Old Kampala Arena.

Nsambya based volleyball club, Sport-S start their round 2 on a serious note with a 3 straight-sets win against Prisons side. The former has recently been crowned National Club Championship champions after defeating league title holders Nemo Stars.

This win further cements the club’s chances of participating in the league playoffs. For Prisons, this loss will see them sink further down the table just above the relegation zone.

Sport-S ended their round 1 against Prison the same way they have started round 2, with a 3-0 win. Teams chasing behind Sport-S like Nemo and OBB will have to win their round 2 opening matches in order to keep up with the pace the Nsambya based club is moving at.

National Volleyball League: NCC Champions Sport-S Face Prisons Volleyball Club

National Club Champioship

The Uganda National Volleyball League action returns this weekend from the Christmas and New years break. NCC Champions Sport-S take on Prisons.

National Club Championship champions Sport-S will re-open national volleyball league activities against Prisons Volleyball Club on Saturday, 22nd January 2022. Sport-S went into the break after round one in the top spot on the table Standings above League titles holders Nemo Stars.

Sports-S have recently been crowned champions of NCC after defeating Nemo Stars last weekend so one would say their spirits are high for the up and coming fixture. Not the same can be said for Nemo Stars after that heavy defeat, who also have a match against University side Nkumba University Volleyball Club.

These two NCC finalists share 24 points each in the league table and are arguably bound to end up in the league playoffs. Nemo Stars has not had the best performance as expected from the fans despite their position.

One team to look out for this round is Orange Block Busters OBB. For a club that has consistently moved up from Serie C to B and is now in the top-flight Serie A standing in 3rd position, they are a force to be reckoned with. OBB played league titles holders, Nemo Stars to a 3-1 win in the first round of the National Volleyball League.

OBB has only lost to Sport-S and one would say they stand a huge chance to be 3rd team to make it to the playoffs. Nevertheless, it is way too early to make that conclusion reason being that we have seen clubs like 8th placed Ndejje serve off to a poor start but picked up very well during the course of round one. The return of Key players in round two will mean a tight competition fo both playoffs spot and relegation battle.

On the other hand in the women’s league, University Ndejje Elites have not lost a single match in the National Volleyball League standing in the top spot with VVC behind them in 2nd place with only a point separating the two clubs.

Women’s League title holders KCB-Nkumba Volleyball Club have still not yet picked up the pace with a poor performance from round 1 with 4 losses of their 6 games played. The club has recently gone into partnership with FHNS, Hermes Sports, and also unveiled the 2022 kit.

A minute after the break, Olivier Kwizera kept the blues in the game with a brilliant save for Etincelles’ Ciza Hussein Mugabo.

Things got worst for Rubavu based club in 62nd minute when Ibuti Hadji Bizimana, the son of Etincelles’ head coach, Mr Abdoul Bizimana had to be sent off from the game which simplified the task for Rayon Sports who were playing to consolidate the score.

In additional time, Etincelles’ GK, Dominic Nsengimana failed to deal with Kevin Muhire’s cross and end up deflecting the ball in the back of his net. Full time Etincelles 0-2 Rayon Sports
