AfroBasket 2021: 8 Point Difference Shutters East Africa’s Only Chance At A Title.

AfroBasket

East Africa’s last shot at an AfroBasket title laid in the hands of the Silverbacks yesterday, unfortunately, Cape Verde had other plans.

The 2021 edition of the AfroBasket attracted 4 East African countries, namely, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and South Sudan. All 4 nations managed to make it through the group stages to the playoffs qualifiers.

It was at this stage that the true potential of East Africa was put to the test. Host Rwanda was faced with the hurdle of Guinea, Uganda with Nigeria, and South Sudan with Kenya.

Rwanda and Kenya were the first East African nation to get ejected from the tournament at the playoffs qualifiers stage after losing 68-72 and 60-58 respectively which left only 2 contenders.

Uganda and South Sudan advanced to the quarter-finals where they were to battle Cape Verde and titleholders Tunisia respectively.

Yesterday, Tunisia vs South Susan was first on the schedule, and for those who watched the game, South Sudan did a tremendous job holding Tunisia till the half-time break when scores were square at 40 each.

Tunisia went ahead to win the match 80-65 thus eliminating yet another East African Nation from the tournament.

It was now down to the Silverbacks from Uganda who were in the spotlight for East Africa. Cape Verde dominated 3 quarters o the game. Uganda tried to come back in the last quarter of the match but it was clear enough that the point difference was too big for the Silverbacks to close the gap.

Cape Verde went on to win the match 79-71 thus ending East Africa’s chances at a first AfroBasket title.

The closest East Africa has gotten to the title was in September of 1993 when The Morans of Kenya, also the host, emerged 4th in the tournament.

Cape Verde, Tunisia, Cote d’Ivoire, and Senegal remain in contention and we are yet to find out who will continue to the final later today. Tunisia and Senegal are 2021 Afrobasket favorites with Senegal holding 5 titles and Tunisia 2 trophies plus being title holders.

Senegal became the first country to qualify for the 2021 AfroBasket semifinals after a 79-74 win against Angola on Wednesday, September 1, 2021. The Senegal crucial victory was powered by a double-double from big man Gorgui Dieng of Atlanta Hawks.

Angola started the game with high intensity and left their opponent no chance to settle in as they finished the 1st quarter with a 5 points lead. Carlos Morais was unstoppable as he dropped 14 points (5/5FG, 4/4 3FG) in the 1st quarter. He scored these points in a period of 5 minutes after coming off the bench.

In the 2nd quarter, The Angolan shooting guard, Carlos Morais was held and Senegal controlled the whole quarter through the help of their NBA star Gorgui Dieng. Despite losing Maurice Ndour due to an injury, the Senegal Lions finished the 1st half on a high note. 44-33.

The 11-time titleholders, Angola didn’t want to let it go as they tried to cut the deficit in the 3rd quarter and scored 22 points while Senegal made 17 points. At the moment the difference was at 6 points in favor of the West Africans.

The score was too tight in the last quarter of the game until the last minute when the scores were square 74 each. A controversial decision was made after an official video review to hand Senegal possession that resulted in a basket that shaped the results of the game. The final score was 79-74 and Terranga Lions become the first Country to secure a semi-final ticket.

Senegalese guard Brancou Badio led his team, scoring 14 points while power forward, Gorgui Dieng posted a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds to help Senegal seal the victory over Angola in Kigali Arena.

Angolan Sharp-shooter Carlos Morais poured in 28 points however, it was not quite enough for the 2013 AfroBasket MVP to help his team advance to the semi-final. Though he shot just 11-for-18 from the field in his last 2021 AfroBasket game.

The win for Senegal raises the prospect for them to add this African Championship title to the fifth won in 1999 at their home soil, Dakar.

They will first have to get past Côte d’Ivoire in the semi-final, Côte d’Ivoire edged Guinea 98-50 in Wednesday’s other quarter-final.

AfroBasket 2021: Uganda Qualified Into The Quarter-Final After Exterminating Nigeria.

AfroBasket 2021: Uganda Qualified Into The Quarter-Final After Exterminating Nigeria.

Uganda’s Silverbacks astound Nigeria to write history by making the quarter-finals of the AfroBasket 2021 despite money concerns in camp.

In the 2015 AfroBasket tournament held in Rades, Tunisia, Nigeria were crowned champions lifting their first-ever trophy of the tournament. In this tournament, Nigeria faced new entrants, the Silverbacks, and quelled them 98-59.

It was a completely different ball game come to the 2021 Afrobasket where Nigeria did not expect that the then-new entrants would hatch a plan that would have the title contenders out of the tournament.

“The key to the game was our defense. Holding them under 36 percent from the field; we forced 19 turnovers. I think what is going to be more impactful in the future is the influence that these players will have on the new generation,” Uganda head coach George Galanopoulos said.

Robinson Opong’s domination behind the arch accumulated 18 out team-high 19 points with a match-high efficiency of +23. Deng John Gue had the most playtime followed by Ishmail Wainright and Arthur Kaluma. All 3 players contributed 11 points.

The Silverbacks had complete command of 3 quarters of the game with Nigeria trying to pull back in the 4th quarter. At some point in the match, the silverbacks had a 21 point difference over 2015 AfroBasket winners, Nigeria.

Q1 (12-24) Q2 (19-20) Q3 (18-23) Q4 (19-13) Full-time 68-80

The Silverbacks came into the tournament with a couple of financial issues but this was no reason to deter the team from winning against Nigeria to proceed to the Quarter-Final stage of the tournament. The Silverbacks now face the hurdle of Cape Verde in the Quarter-Finals.

Meanwhile, host Rwanda’s journey at the tournament came to an end after losing their playoffs qualification match to Guinea 68-72.

The Qualifiers process to determine the 30 out of 32 teams that will participate at the FIBA 2023 Basketball World Cup has been established, with African qualifiers to be played in 4 groups, two east African countries in Group B.

Uganda has been pitted in Group A alongside Nigeria, Cape Verde, and Mali. The Silverbacks found themselves in almost a similar group of 2019 World Cup Qualifiers as they were together with both Nigeria and Mali in Group B.

This draw has put Kenya in Group D with strong contenders in Senegal, Egypt, and DR Congo. Kenyans under the guidance of coach Liz Mills qualified for the FIBA Afrobasket 2021 for the first time in 28 years. Can The Morans continue to write sports history in Kenya?

FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers Draw Results:

Spain is the defending champions of the Basketball World Cup, having beaten Argentine 95-75 in the 2019 Final.

The United States is by far the most successful country in FIBA Basketball World Cup, with USA men’s teams having won 5 titles. The record they shared with Yugoslavia, a country that broke up into six countries.

The Syli achieved this exciting milestone after beating Egypt in the last group stage game and upset Rwanda in last night’s quarter-final playoffs game. They have a mountain to climb in the quarter-final as they face off their neighbor Côte d’Ivoire.

Cedric Mansaré scored a team-high 16 points while Rwanda’s Kenneth Gasana dropped the game and tournament-high 28 points.

Uganda National Volleyball League Top Tier League Team Number Goes Down.

Uganda National Volleyball League

The Men’s and Women’s Uganda National Volleyball League Serie A season 2021/2022 will see the number of participating teams reduce by almost half.

Season 2021/2022 of the Uganda National Volleyball League will have a lower number of competitors participating in the top-tier Serie A for both the women’s and men’s leagues.

Previously the women’s league only had one tier but this will change come season 2021/2022 of the Uganda National Volleyball League where two tiers have been created, Serie A and Serie B.

The creation of a lower-tier will most definitely bring more competition to the women league as teams in the top tier will clash to avoid relegation and also lower-tier teams will want to join the top guns.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic headache, Uganda Volleyball Federation rolled out an activity calendar that describes the Uganda National Volleyball League to begin mid-September. The men’s national team is out in Rwanda for the African National Volleyball Championships which will run through September.

Chances are that the men’s top-tier league may be delayed due to participating team players being out for national duty. This may not be a reason to delay the other Series.

Expectantly the league starts as scheduled as it has been a long while since fans witnessed action from one of the most entertaining leagues in the country.

The Silverbacks Take Advantage Of Cameroon’s Wounds

Silverbacks

The Silverbacks of Uganda record first win against wounded Cameroon who played with less than the allowed number of players.

Cameroon continues to suffer and this time losing yet another match to Uganda. Their first misery came when they had to forfeit the match to South Sudan after registering positive COVID-19 cases in their camp.

The Silverbacks made no mistake capitalizing on the disadvantaged Cameroon side who played with a roster of 9 players rather than the usual 12. The boys from the pearl of Africa led the entire match leaving their opponent no chance to take the lead.

Despite the loss to Africa Giants, Senegal in the opening game, The Silverbacks came properly inclined to win their first game of the tournament Q1 (27-22) Q2 (17-11) Q3 (18-14) Q4 (18-19) ending the match 80-66

Apart from the improved performance of the entire team, the main highlight of the match came from the show by Adam Seiko who gathered 20 points from the 26 minutes spent on court.
