2023 Basketball World Cup Qualifiers Draw has been made, East African Countries learn their fates

The Qualifiers process to determine the 30 out of 32 teams that will participate at the FIBA 2023 Basketball World Cup has been established, with African qualifiers to be played in 4 groups, two east African countries in Group B.

Rwanda, the hosts of 2021 FIBA AfroBasket has been drawn in Group B with fellow East African mates South Sudan, Cameroon, and the giants, Tunisia. Both Rwanda and South Sudan were in 2021 AfroBasket Qualifiers Group D, where South Sudan won the first window game in Kigali before Rwanda overcome them in the second window game played in Monastir.

Uganda has been pitted in Group A alongside Nigeria, Cape Verde, and Mali. The Silverbacks found themselves in almost a similar group of 2019 World Cup Qualifiers as they were together with both Nigeria and Mali in Group B.

This draw has put Kenya in Group D with strong contenders in Senegal, Egypt, and DR Congo. Kenyans under the guidance of coach Liz Mills qualified for the FIBA Afrobasket 2021 for the first time in 28 years. Can The Morans continue to write sports history in Kenya?

FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers Draw Results:

The fixtures will be announced in due course with the first window games expected to be played between 20th and 30th November 2021.

The 2023 World Cup will be hosted by an Asian trio of countries; Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines hence they have automatic qualifications. However, Indonesia has not been guaranteed an automatic qualification by FIBA. It has to qualify for the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup first and finish at least in eighth place.

This Basketball World Cup will serve as a qualification for the 2024 Olympic games, where the top two teams from each of the Americas and Europe, and the top team from each of Africa, Asia, and Oceania, will qualify alongside the tournament’s host France.

Spain is the defending champions of the Basketball World Cup, having beaten Argentine 95-75 in the 2019 Final.

The United States is by far the most successful country in FIBA Basketball World Cup, with USA men’s teams having won 5 titles. The record they shared with Yugoslavia, a country that broke up into six countries.

Guinea stuns Rwanda to eliminate the hosts from 2021 AfroBasket in a thrilling game of Quarterfinal playoffs that saw Syli National overcome the 10 points deficit in the fourth quarter.

Rwanda led by 2 points in the opening quarter of the game, 15-13 but Guinea snuffed out the deficit before the second quarter ended. The Syli led by just one, 31-30, at the break.

The third quarter was dominated by the hosts as the crowd support was immense. Kenneth Gasana’s 13 points in the third quarter helped Rwanda take the 10 points lead before the final quarter, 24-13 to make it 54-44.

Guinea, through captain Cedric Mansaré, displayed an outstanding performance in the last quarter to thrash Rwanda and end their hopes of progressing in the quarter-final for the first time in history. They come from ten points down in the third quarter to end the game with four points difference. 72-68

Rwanda had more than enough chances to win it however, some poor shot selections in the last quarter cost them the game.

On the other side, It was a historic day in Guinea Basketball as they reached Quarterfinal for the first time since 1962. The Syli achieved this exciting milestone after beating Egypt in the last group stage game and upset Rwanda in last night’s quarter-final playoffs game. They have a mountain to climb in the quarter-final as they face off their neighbor Côte d’Ivoire.

Cedric Mansaré scored a team-high 16 points while Rwanda’s Kenneth Gasana dropped the game and tournament-high 28 points.

Uganda National Volleyball League Top Tier League Team Number Goes Down.

Uganda National Volleyball League

The Men’s and Women’s Uganda National Volleyball League Serie A season 2021/2022 will see the number of participating teams reduce by almost half.

Season 2021/2022 of the Uganda National Volleyball League will have a lower number of competitors participating in the top-tier Serie A for both the women’s and men’s leagues.

Previously the women’s league only had one tier but this will change come season 2021/2022 of the Uganda National Volleyball League where two tiers have been created, Serie A and Serie B.

The creation of a lower-tier will most definitely bring more competition to the women league as teams in the top tier will clash to avoid relegation and also lower-tier teams will want to join the top guns.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic headache, Uganda Volleyball Federation rolled out an activity calendar that describes the Uganda National Volleyball League to begin mid-September. The men’s national team is out in Rwanda for the African National Volleyball Championships which will run through September.

Chances are that the men’s top-tier league may be delayed due to participating team players being out for national duty. This may not be a reason to delay the other Series.

Expectantly the league starts as scheduled as it has been a long while since fans witnessed action from one of the most entertaining leagues in the country.

The Silverbacks Take Advantage Of Cameroon’s Wounds

Silverbacks

The Silverbacks of Uganda record first win against wounded Cameroon who played with less than the allowed number of players.

Cameroon continues to suffer and this time losing yet another match to Uganda. Their first misery came when they had to forfeit the match to South Sudan after registering positive COVID-19 cases in their camp.

The Silverbacks made no mistake capitalizing on the disadvantaged Cameroon side who played with a roster of 9 players rather than the usual 12. The boys from the pearl of Africa led the entire match leaving their opponent no chance to take the lead.

Despite the loss to Africa Giants, Senegal in the opening game, The Silverbacks came properly inclined to win their first game of the tournament Q1 (27-22) Q2 (17-11) Q3 (18-14) Q4 (18-19) ending the match 80-66

Apart from the improved performance of the entire team, the main highlight of the match came from the show by Adam Seiko who gathered 20 points from the 26 minutes spent on court.

This result drives Uganda to the top spot in Group D above group favorite Senegal who face South Sudan tonight.

Cameroon will have to work harder to qualify to the next stage as they face Senegal in the last match of the group stages. Uganda hopes to win their last group stage match in order to increase their chances of qualifying.

Kenneth Gasana Instrumental In Executing Plan For Rwanda Victory

Kenneth Gasana

Kenneth Gasana’s distinguished performance helps Rwanda log yet another win as host of the continent’s most prestigious basketball tournament, AfroBasket.

Rwanda has proven to be a force to be reckoned with after a second win in the AfroBasket 2021 that propels them to the top of Group A. This comes at the expense of Angola who suffers yet another loss after losing 71-77 to Cape Verde.

As the final score (68-71) states, it was a close game, there was nothing between Angola and Rwanda when the 1st quarter ended and half-time only had Angola lead by 3 points.

Angola went ahead to stretch the lead in the 3rd quarter and at this point, they were favorites to win the match. However, Rwanda was not ready to let it slip easily.

Angola had the 6 minutes down into the 4th quarter but that to a 3 pointer by Jean Jacques, Rwanda took the lead and never turned back. The main turning point of the game was at 1 minute to go, score (68-68) when Alex Mpoyo made a 3 pointer that would later have them win the match 68-71.

With all that said, Kenneth Gasana should be the man to receive most of the credit for helping his side execute the perfect plan to plunge Angola to the bottom of the table.

Head coach, Cheikh Sarr’s tactics of playing Kenneth Gasana for almost the entire game paid off. Kenneth played 36 minutes which was more than any other player who stepped foot to play on the court.

Kenneth Gasana went ahead to top the score charts with 18 points and 4 steals.

Angola hopes to log their first win in the upcoming Group A match against Congo DR while Rwanda might go unbeaten in the group stages should they win the encounter with Cape Verde. Both games will be played on Saturday, August 28th, 2021.

East Vs West Africa Affair As Uganda And Kenya Are Squandered By Senegal And Cote D’Ivoire

Uganda

Uganda and Kenya are not off to a good start as West Africa sides Senegal and Cote D’Ivoire secure the opening match win thanks to the East Africa counterparts.

Unlike host Rwanda, East African representatives Uganda and Kenya have not shared the joy of opening match glory.

The Silverbacks were faced with the huge task of challenging five-time AfroBasket champions The Lions of Senegal in their Group D opener. Apart from leading all quarters of the games, The Lions made a massive statement in the 3rd quarter with a 19 point range between them and opponent The Silverbacks.

Atlanta Hawks player Gorgui Dieng led the score charts with 19 points while the USA-based Adam Seiko led the charts for Uganda with 12 points. Match ended 93-55 (24-14, 19-17, 28-9, 25-15)

The same fate for Uganda was witnessed for The Morans of Kenya though the difference was not as extended as that from the Silverbacks-Lions game.

It was challenging to predict a probable match-winner after the 1st and 2nd quarter as there was no significant difference between them Q1(26-24) and Q2(13-25) going into the half-time break square.

However, Cote D’Ivoire proved to be the match favorite after ending the 3rd quarter with a 6 point lead Q3(21-15) and also went on to win the match 88-70.

Kenya’s Taylor Ongwae who plays for the Danish club, Bakken Bears topped the score charts with 25 points while Matt Costello helped Cote D’Ivoire secure a win scoring 20 points.

Uganda faces another tough opponent in Cameroon on August 27th. Cameroon were forced to give away a win to South Sudan after registering positive COVID-19 cases in their camp. Cameroon will not make it a smooth ride for The Silverbacks following the circumstances mentioned above.

The same goes to say for The Morans from Kenya as a tough opponent, Nigeria awaits their next fixture on August 27th.

Will The Stanbic Uganda Cup 2020-2021 Season Be Concluded?

Stanbic Cup

The Stanbic Uganda Cup has once again been postponed one day to the first scheduled semi-final tie.

This is the second time the Uganda Cup is postponed this season as the first time came as a result of concerns related to COVID-19 in June.

This time the reason mainly revolves around the engagement of participating players in national engagements. “The National Team preparations for Kenya vs Uganda and Uganda vs Mali are underway. Vipers and Express have more than 3 players in the training camp,” said Nalule.

Draws were conducted a couple of weeks ago and dates were set between August 19th and 30th with Vipers to play against Police FC and League Champions Express FC to play against BUL FC.

At the moment the national team is in a training camp ahead of matches scheduled in Jordan against the Syrian national team on August 23rd and 26th, 2021. Thereafter, they travel to Addis Ababa to face Ethiopia on August 29th.

The national team will then play their first qualifier match against Kenya on September 2nd at Nyayo National Stadium.

Apart from national engagements, participants, Express FC have continental engagements where they will face Sudan’s Al Merrikh in the CAF Champions League, between September 10th and 12th for the 1st leg and September 19th and 21st for the 2nd leg.

With a tight calendar that will have the league commence in October when is the appropriate to have the Stanbic Uganda Cup played to the conclusion?

Arua Hill’s 1-0 victory over Tooro United earns them a FUFA Big League whereas first-timers, Gaddafi FC frustrate Proline FC to book a Premier League spot.

Only one goal was needed to make the difference for Arua Hill as they faced Tooro United in the playoffs encounter at FUFA Technical Center in Njeru. Not the same can be said for Proline FC as they missed out on a chance to return to top-flight football.

25 minutes was enough time for the boys from the Rwenzori group to secure a win through Rashid Kawawa. Unfortunately, opponents Tooro United ended the game with one man less due to the ejection of Patrick Serunjogi.

First-timers Gaddafi FC made no mistake collapsing Proline FC’s dreams of returning to the premier league after 2 sweet strikes from Steven Munguchi and Frank Mulimi.
