REG
REG BBC

REG BBC has won the men’s pre-season competition for the fourth time in a row as IPRC Huye regains its glory in front of The Hoops Rwanda in the women’s category.

Rwanda Energy Group BBC started this tournament on a high with a new signing from APR, Pascal Niyonkuru finding himself in his new club which could prove to be a huge signing for REG Power.

REG had no obvious challenge until they faced off IPRC Kigali coached by John Bahufite. The Kicukiro based club also added new players Including the duo of a guard, Armand Cubahiro and a center Eric Muhayumukiza from their counterparts of IPRC Huye.

In this tournament, IPRC Kigali used also a young promising point guard from Espoir BBC, Olivier Turatsinze and another center from Nigeria, Nnandi Emmanuel who didn’t convince the audience.

In the final match, IPRC Kigali started well and finished the first quarter ahead of REG, 14-13. The next two quarters were dominated by REG, 11-14 and 05-20 before IPRC tried to pull back which was not easy to close the gap of 17 points. It ended 53-67, Belleck Bell scored the highest points in the game, 27

The BKBNL Pre-season Women Champions, RP-IPRC Huye

Last season, The hoops beat IPRC in the final of the BKBNL closing tournament and it was the first league defeat for IPRC Huye since July 2019. This time, IPRC ousted them for the trophy. 19-20, 15-10, 18-15, 19-14 to make it 71-59. Nicole Urwibutso scored 27 points alone

Former Berco Stars and APR BBC point guard, Sandra Kantore has joined Ubumwe BBC after eight-year with the army side, APR WBBC.

Sandra Kantore, one of the longest-serving APR Women BBC players, has made her way to Ubumwe BBC as the head coach of this team has confirmed it to Ground-sports.

“Yeah, It is true. Sandra Kantore is now our player. We have finalized all the details,” said coach Esperance Mukaneza.

The new point guard, Sandra Kantore welcomed to Ubumwe familly

Kantore, the 2018-2019 Basketball Player of the Year, suffered an injury in her left knee, she has been sidelined for nearly a year and a half but according to her new coach, she recovered and she is ready to deliver on court.

“Sandra started pre-season training really well and I think now she is fit. We should have used her in these pre-season games but she told us that there is something she had not yet settled with her former team. So, she will start playing for us in the upcoming championship games we are preparing for,” she added.

Asked if there will be more signings before BKBNL 2021 Tipoff, coach Mukaneza said they still need at least one more player. “We want another center, but as for the Rwandans who have that ability, they have contracts in their teams, we will probably be looking for a solution from abroad. It is even possible that we start the championship without the new addition needed, but in the mid-season, we can add more players as the rules allow,” the coach added.

“We were hoping Sarah Ageno would recover soon and play for us but her injury was serious and we can not count on her this season. We are partnering with her National team management, the Gazelles of Uganda in her treatment.”

The new signing, Sandra Kantore, who is nicknamed ‘Do Me’ carries Rwandan identification documents despite representing Burundi at the International level. She was considered as a top point guard in the local women’s league before she had an injury that kept her off the court for more than a year and a half.

BKBNL 2021 season tipoff date is yet to be announced. Whether it will start before or after the BAL games scheduled between 16 and 30 May 2021. Last season, Ubumwe finished third behind the champions Hoops Rwanda and the finalists IPRC Huye.

Ndejje University Volleyball Open

Ndejje University Volleyball Open was the last before closing sports and the tournament is back to start volleyball activities.

The Ndejje University Volleyball Open marks the start of volleyball activities in the country after a long volleyball drought. The open was the last time we saw volleyball from the UVF calendar right before all sports were stopped because of the pandemic.

The tournament usually comes right before the new league serves off and is a good time for clubs to showcase their talents and pre-season preparations. However, this time is far away from the league start as a new calendar has been adapted.

The Ndejje University Volleyball Open attracts many teams across all series in the National Volley League both in men’s and women’s categories. So far 17 men and 11 women’s teams have confirmed participation.

The Volleyball Open will be played from 24th to the 25th of April at the University sports grounds. Final confirmation for teams will be made on Saturday, the opening day of the tournament after a technical meeting early in the morning at the Ndejje University.

The defending champions from the men’s side after defeating host Ndejje, Nemostars will not participate as they traveled to represent the country at the 2021 Men’s Club African Championships in Tunis, Tunisia.

BKBNL Pre-season defending champions, REG BBC is unstoppable in a tournament that Patriots did not participate in due to the NBA’s rules regarding the BAL tournament they have ahead.

The mini-tournament sponsored by Bank of Kigali which is a partner of basketball in Rwanda marks the TipOff of the basketball season. This edition will not have teams like Espoir BBC, Rusizi BBC, and Patriots BBC.

The defending champions, started high with 2 wins against UR-CMHS and RP-IPRC Huye. They thrashed the UR-CMHS student 98-34 with new team captain, Shyaka Olivier putting 19 in the basket.

April 23, 2021, REG BBC played its second match against RP-IPRC Huye. The game was played with so much passion from both sides that it would be hard to imagine that it was a friendly match. The first quarter ended with 6 points led by defending champions, 20-26

The guys from the south led by coach Charles Mushumba came back to dominated their opponent in the second quarter. REG trailed the southerners 41-36 at the break.

RP-IPRC Huye gave this game away in the 3rd quarter when REG recovered stronger, maintained a solid defensive unit, using their physicality as a strength, and the trio Kami, Shyaka, and Belleck dominated. Belleck Bell made 8 points in 3rd. 24-11 in general.

In the last quarter, both teams scored 21 points which was to enough for the Southern Province based club to grab yesterday’s victory. The final result was 81-73 in the favor of REG BBC.

In the next assignment, the REG will lock horns with Shoot for the stars.

REG has 2 new recruits in Prince Muhizi from UGB and Pascal Niyonkuru from APR BBC however, they will not have the services of Jean Jacques Nshobozwabyosenumukiza and Elie Kaje. Both joined Patriots temporally to boost their squad in the upcoming BAL games.

As a reminder, this pre-season is an open tournament. A player can play for a team without a contract and for each game, the team provides a list of 12 players, regardless of the number of foreigners and nationals contrary to the rules of the league.

In the last edition, REG overcame the Patriots to clinch the trophy. This year, the Patriots have not participated in these games because according to rules stated by the NBA and BAL, it’s part of the precautionary measures against Covid-19. It’s already less than two weeks to the expected arrival date for all teams. So, they need all players and staff to stay healthy and fit.

Sc Villa Deny URA FC Chance To Go Top, KCCA FC Survive Mbarara City FC At Kakyeka Stadium.

URA FC

Title contenders URA FC were held to a goalless draw by league record champions Sc Villa at Bombo Military grounds.

URA FC were pre-match favourites basing on current league form. Coach Sam Ssimbwa’s men came calling. Cromwell Rwothomio, Shafic Kagimu Kuchi and Michael Birungi had chances to put tax collectors ahead but were denied by SC Villa’s experienced keeper Said Keni.

Sc Villa had chances through Muhammad Senoga, Geoffrey Waswa from a set-piece and Ronald Olaki’s header that couldn’t disturb Nafian Alionzi.

And in Kakyeka Stadium, Mbarara City FC couldn’t capitalise on home advantage as it has been for many years against big clubs in the country. KCCA FC kept calm and forced a draw after a resurgent Ankole Lions.

Mbarara City FC was welcoming club captain Hillary Mukundane from suspension. Ankole Lions created the majority of chances from each half but club captain and custodian Charles Lukwago was equal to the city’s challenges.

Mukundane, Henry Kitegenyi had cleat cut chances in 1st half to score but their efforts were wasted.

Rwita Flavia Kanyesigye Joins Nkumba University, 5 Out 1 In

Rwita Flavia Kanyesigye

Rwita Flavia Kanyesigye joins National Volleyball League champions Nkumba University Volleyball club.

In a statement on the club’s Facebook page, Rwita Flavia Kanyesigye was announced as the latest signing for Nkumba VC from Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

Defending champions Nkumba VC have in this transfer window, Eunice Nuwabigaba to KAVC, Gracious Kushemererwe to Ndejje University, Shadia Wanyeze to Ndejje University, Habiba Namala to RRA and most likely Doreen Akiteng will head out to Sport-S.

The club has so only brought in one player, Rwita Flavia Kanyesigye to replace Habiba Namala who departed to Rwanda Revenue Authority RRA VC. The signing will play the role of receiver-attacker on a 30-months contract with the club.

Opponents Espoir VC and KAVC have signed the most players this transfer window meaning the defending champions will have to re-organise the team well inorder to defend the title.

49 Players With Change Of Heart, Nkumba and UCU To Release The Most Players

Nkumba

This transfer window comes with 49 transfer requests, 40 approved and 9 waiting for approval. Nkumba releases 8 players.

The transfer list was released today on the Uganda Volleyball Federation official Facebook page.

Top-flight league new entrants Orange Block Buster from the men’s made a statement in this transfer window when they requested to have 7 players join the side. 6 have been approved with 1 still pending citing the reason that Ivan Ongom Bob has a contract that runs till October in Rwanda.

KAVC and Espoir from the women’s clubs will receive the biggest number. Unfortunately, Nkumba has been affected the most, releasing 8 players from both men and women’s teams. It should be expected that Nkumba will most likely fill the gaps with fresh young players.

As for the other players with status pending, SOC commented that the transfers will be approved after mediation between the parties involved.

Wakiso Giants’ Eleventh League Draw A Worry For Defending Champions

Wakiso Giants FC

Wakiso Giants have the highest number of draws so far in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League and their lastest is a threat to defending champions should URA win against SC Villa at Bombo Grounds Tomorrow.

The Purple Sharks, Wakiso Gainst continue with their marathon of draws after holding defending champions, Vipers SC to a goalless draw in the matchday 19 counter of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

Wakiso Giants lead the tally for draws with 11 ahead of Express FC and Kyetume FC. The record of draws does not put the purple sharks in a safe position as the relegation zone is knocking on their door.

The results today, however much was in favour of the visitors, was not one for Kajoba to laugh about. Ball possession was shared equally amongst both side but the hosts had more chances of tilting the scale with many dangerous attacks at their opponent’s goal.

The visitors on the other hand picked up a number of yellow cards with one member from the technical team sent off the pitch for misconduct. This draw should be one URA coach should capitalise on to have his side lead the table.

All other games played today resulted in wins except for the encounter at St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende. Find results from matchday 19 here.
