2021 Afrobasket Qualifiers: Algeria withdraws from the first window.

In July this year, Rabah Bouarifi, President of the Algerian Basketball Federation (FABB) declared the season null and void due to the novel Coronavirus pandemic. Based on this, he says the team is not ready to compete, and added that they cannot go to Rwanda with a decimated team and he insisted that he is against the act of participating just to participate.

Further more, Algerian head coach Faid Bilal and 4 players tested positive for COVID-19 and in addition to that it’s not easy for foreign based players to reach the country due to airspace restrictions.

This comes after national team head coach Faid Bilal had expressed concern over the team’s preparations, citing delays in starting training and adding that basketball games in the country have been stopped for more than seven months.

The Algeria Basketball National team is made up of a large number of domestic players and a small number of binationals who are based in France. Algeria had to get rid of Cape Verde in the pre-qualifiers in January before they were drawn with Nigeria, Mali and Rwanda in Group D.

The decision from the Africa basketball governing body on Group D is yet to be made whether the teams will be three or one more team will be added to complete the group. If they would have to give another wild card, there is no doubt that South Sudan would have a chance as they finished second behind Cape Verde in the recent Closing tournament held in Cameroon last month where they were looking for a team to complete Group E.

The AFCON 2021 Qualifiers November window will be played no matter the condition mostly owing to Coronavirus says CAF.

The football governing body CAF has emphasized that all 48 matches scheduled for the November window must be played and any nation that does honour their doubleheader fixtures will be handed a 2-0 lose.

CAF says that teams should have at least 15 players on the squad so as to contend that is 11 starting players plus 4 substitutes.

There have been rising concerns from different nations as regards to the impact the Coronavirus on the 48 matches in matchday 3 and 4 of the AFCON 2021 Qualifiers. Coaches are worried that key players in Europe may not feature in the doubleheader by reason of many COVID-19 restrictions there.

Teams like Mali have resorted to calling up a larger than normal squad as a means to counter the possibility of players withdrawing due to positive tests. Mali called up a 37-man Eagles squad.

CAF also maintained that all the 48 encounters will be played behind closed. CAF also added that teams have the liberty to play the doubleheaders at one venue. Sao Tome has adopted the offer and will play their games against South Africa in port city Durban. Sao Tome is the only country so far that has relinquish their home advantage.

No Kariakoo Derby Bragging Rights For Simba Or Yanga

No Kariakoo Derby Bragging Rights For Simba Or Yanga

Neither Simba nor Yanga can claim the Kariakoo Derby bragging rights after a 1-1 draw at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

Simba and Yanga both head back home with a point to share and none of them can petition for the Kariakoo Derby bragging rights until they meet again in their second leg fixture of the Vodacom Premier League.

Both teams were evenly matched in terms of possession of the ball in the first 30 minutes of the game with equal chances at goal until Simba committed a foul in the penalty area that led to 2 yellow cards for Simba.

Micheal Sarpong took advantage of the penalty opportunity for his team and scored the first goal of the match after 32 minutes from the penalty spot. Yanga held the lead through to the end of the first half. 1st half Yanga 1-0 Simba.

Simba came back strong in the second half sharing most of the ball possession in this half plus various attacks at goal. They were awarded another yellow card later in the second half.

On the other hand, Yanga tried as much as possible to hold the lead until the dying minutes of the game. They were awarded 2 yellow cards in the second half.

Joash Onyango created a chance for Luis Miquissone to put in one and equalize for his side Simba thus denying Yanga a shot at claiming the Kariakoo Derby bragging rights today.

After 10 games played by all team in the league, Azam still has the top spot with Yanga trailing only a point behind them. Simba still a 4 points gap they need to close in order to gain an advantage against their traditional rival Yanga.

Yanga SC XI: Metacha Mnata, Kibwana Shomari, Mustapha Yassin, Lamine Moro, Bakary Nondo, Mukoko Tonombe, Tuisila Kisinda, Feisal Salum, Michael Sarpong , Ditram Adrian and Farid Moussa
Subs: Farouk Shikhalo, Abdallah Shaibu, Zawadi Mauya, Deus Kaseke, Adeyum Ahmed, Yacouba Sogne and Said Juma Makapu.

Subs: Beno Kakolanya, Gadiel Michael, Said Ndemla, Hassan Dilunga, Ibrahim AJibu and Francis Kahata.

Clatous Chama was expected not to feature for his side but was added to the starting XI.

Simba will travel Jamhuri Stadium to face Coastal Union and Yanga travel to Azam complex to see if they can claim the top spot. All these games will be played after the international break for AFCON Qualifier games is done.

We expect the Kariakoo Derby bragging rights will be arrogated again in the second leg.
