Uganda's Ivan Bogere Was Highly Honored After Winning CECAFA U20 Tournament

Central Forward Ivan Bogere made immense accomplishments at the wrapped-up CECAFA U20 tournament.

Ivan Bogere was particularly involved for his side when his keen eye for the goal bolstered Uganda to advance through the different stages of the tournament. The lad is a football prodigy whose geniuses have provoked excitement and admiration among Ugandan fans.

Ivan scored two against Burundi in the group stages, another two goals against Kenya in the semi-finals, and one goal against Tanzania in the final in which Uganda was declared reigning champions. He could have easily made the tally of 6 but missed a penalty awarded in the final. For that matter, the youngster topped the goal charts with a total of 5 goals scored

Bringing the trophy home and also being awarded top scorer of the tournament adds to the accolade the youngster already enjoys to his name. In addition to all that, he walked away with prize money worth 1000 US dollars.

The Uganda U20 boys will enjoy 7 digit figures displayed on their available balance should they win against Tanzania today.

The Uganda Hippos launched their CECAFA U20 campaign unsatisfactorily when they drew against South Sudan 0-0 but this was not a reason for the U20 boys to waive their right to claim the promise of a tremendous sum of money after qualifying for the AFCON U20 and later on winning the CECAFA U20 tournament.

The Uganda U20 boys came back stronger in the contest against Burundi which they won 6-1 thus advancing to the semi-final match against Kenya that saw the opposition fall 3-1, qualifying for the AFCON U20 and for that matter entitled to redeem cash in the bank worth 700 US dollars each.

Should the boys go ahead to win the tournament, an additional 300 US dollars each will be credited to their accounts bringing the total bulk to 1000 US dollars.

Uganda will meet Tanzania in the final match of the tournament at the Black Rhino Academy in Arusha Tanzania.

National Basketball League Excitement After FUBA Drops 2021 Calendar

The basketball governing body of Uganda, FUBA, has dropped its activity calendar for the year 2021, National Basketball League to start early next year.

It has been quite a long while since we last caught sight of two teams battling it out on the court. The recently wrapped up FIBA AfroBasket 2021 qualifiers window 1 was only a cocktail of the actual action we relished during the National Basketball League NBL. The NBL is one of the events that clog the MTN Arena and YMCA to full capacity on game nights.

Will basketball ever be the same with the unprecedented and deplorable COVID-19 impacts that have hit the world and sports without fans inclining to the new normal? That said, FUBA is eager to resume its movements after releasing the calendar for 2021 and there is no doubt the NBL is the main program on the list.

A brief peek at the main points we have noted shows that
  • 1st January — Open transfer window
  • 4th January — Start of team registration.
  • 20th January — Annual General Meeting – AGM
  • 29th and 30th January — KIU Basketball Tournament.
  • 8th to 14th February — JKL Tournament.
  • 15th February — End of team registration & player transfers
  • 20th February — Release of All Fixtures
  • 26th February — National Basketball League (1st Leg start)
  • 6th March — LLMC (1st Leg start)

The two tournaments right before the League tips off should be meant to help the clubs get back into the atmosphere of competitive basketball given that they have not been in action for a long time. The basketball association has not yet made any notices regarding fans showing up at the National Basketball League games but hopefully, the present COVID-19 situation in the country by February will allow for fans to return at least a limited number.

The Futsal Association of Uganda FAU together with the Uganda Youth Football Association are working on a project that will bring the new sport to the youth.

The leaders of the youngest and fast-growing sport in the country, Futsal, are taking the initiative to see that the youth in the country pick an interest by partnering with the Uganda Youth Football Association.

In a meeting at FUFA SIG held on Friday, November 27th, 2020, the shareholders of the two associations discussed the roadmap of the project. The major aspects of the project included competition, coaching, and refereeing.

The associations determined that a youth/academy futsal competition for both boys and girls under the ages 13 and 15 should be set up which is tentatively scheduled for April 2021. To support the youth teams’ technical growth, a Futsal Coaching Course firstly at beginners level for academy coaches will be held in February 2021 and last a refereeing course at beginners level will be organized in order to deal with the scarcity of referees for the competitions. This covers the key aspects of the project.

Futsal is not so different from soccer as the basics of playing the sport involve kicking the ball only that futsal is an indoor sport played at a much small scale with the technical rules changing from those of football.

Football has attracted my youth talents in Uganda and the similarities of the two sports should see an easy transition from soccer to futsal. FAU continues to grow its alliances in order to introduce and grow the game as per its strategic plan.

A new club structure was released at an event held at Sheraton Kampala Hotel Ballroom in mid-October that showed how club ownership should return to the public with the VIlla Members Trust Club. the registration of club members was a success.

In a statement on SC Villa website, the club is joyful to be back in group training. “The club’s target this season is to entertain and win with style. We finished third last season, an improvement from the previous season. As a progressive club, we must aim higher this season. We are Sports Club Villa,” said Head Coach Edward Kaziba.

“We have added in a few young talented players whom we think will easily grasp the technical team’s tactics so that together we can propel the club to the highest level. Raphin Kayembe’s dominant performance helps Congo DR recover with a win after they lost to Tunisia yesterday.

Congo DR recovers from a loss yesterday after Tunisia won their encounter with an 11 points difference. Congo DR has now played all 3 games in their Kigali window, winning 2 games. They now head Group A after defeating Madagascar, ahead of rivals Tunisia and this will not change if Tunisia loss their confrontation with the Central African Republic. Congo DR 82-64 Madagascar.

Congo DR played well today thanks to an outstanding performance by Raphin Kayembe both at the halftime break and at the end of the final whistle. The 6’8″ forward played 18 minutes of the game, making 19 points and 5 rebounds. Another impressive performance also came from Jordan Sakho who spent 21 minutes on court, making 10 points and picking 10 rebounds.

“It was very important for us to bounce back and when after a game like yesterday versus Tunisia, we felt like we were right there, and I know personally if I am on the court I always feel like we have chance to win, and I think I let my teammates down yesterday by not being there for them, but we all picked each other up today, they all picked up today to kind of be ready for the day, and this is a big win not only for us but for our whole country my country needed a win like this, and I know everybody back at home is very happy for us,” said Myck Kabongo Lukusa

“Well, I appreciate the victory but as a coach, you always want to look at the bad and the good. So like the effort, I like the camaraderie, I like that we won. I think still, you have to look at the quality of the opposition. Tunisia is a better team than Madagascar so, obviously, I have high expectations for my guys. So, yes I am happy we won,” said coach Mathias Eckhoff

From Madagascar, we saw great acts from Constant Fabrice who played 31 minutes, the most for the team, making 13 points and rebounds, and also Elly Randriamampionona who had 25 minutes on court, 17 points and only 2 rebounds.

Both teams have concluded their FIBA AfroBasket 2021 Qualifiers Kigali window games and wait for results from the game between Tunisia and the Central African Republic.
