The tension is high as Yanga host Simba, in one of Tanzania’s most-watched Dar-es-Salaam match, the Kariakoo Derby at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

It is D-Day and the wait is over. The time is here for the Tanzanian giants to face-off in a match for the one to claim derby boasting rights.

The Kariakoo Derby was initially set for October 18, 2020, but re-scheduled, therefore, Yanga host Simba today, Saturday, November 7th, 2020, to play the only game in hand left that will have all team matched at 10 games played. In their past 6 premier league meetings, they have drawn three times, Yanga has won only once and Simba has won twice.

In the FA Cup last season, the two rivals contended in the semi-final and Simba won 4-1. So, on paper, Simba has the edge over Yanga but we cannot say they will win this. Football is unpredictable more so when it comes to such games.

Yanga who stand 2nd on the table with 23 points need a win from this match so that they top the table and also gain a sizable lead against their traditional rival. Simba need this win to close the 4 points gap they trail behind Yanga.

The pressure is on in a battle between Wekundu Wa Msimbazi’s head coach, The Belgian Sven Vandenbroeck and Burundian Tactician Kaze Cedrick on the side of the Jangwani team. Will this Kariakoo Derby be the real test for coach Kaze in his first derby match as Yanga head coach or a mounting pressure for Vandenbroeck who is trailing 4 pts behind his rival?

Yanga boast an impressive 92% winning form compared to Simba’s 67% winning form owing to the two games they lost. Simba is back to winning ways in their last 2 fixtures were they beat Mwadui 5-0 and Kagera Sugar 2-0, both games played at home. Yanga on the other hand, in their last two fixtures, has registered a goalless draw against Gwambina and won 1-0 against Biashara, both games played away.

Simba has proved that they can spot the goal better than rivals Yanga with a better goal difference and also has two players in the current top 10 scorer chart, captain John BOCCO and striker Meddie Kagere.

Key players for Simba including, Meddie Kagere and Gerson Fraga both with a knee injury, Clatous Chota Chama, Chris Mugalu (doubtful) and Bernald Morrison who is suspended will not feature in today’s match.

And for Yanga, Carlos Carlinhos got injured during training and also Haruna Niyonzima who is back at home in Rwanda will not feature in today’s match.

Tanzania Premier League Board (TPLB) earlier confirmed that the Kariakoo Derby will be officiated by 6 officials. There will be two extra officials behind the goal-line to assist the centre-referee. They assured that security will be tight and urged as many fans as possible to come to attend the Kariakoo Derby.

The Yanga and Simba rivalry is considered one of the biggest in African football. The match is always scheduled at a venue that holds the possible largest capacity as fan fill it to the brim.

Coach Tonny Lakony Exclusive – ‘Best possible chance to compete’

Coach Tonny Lakony Exclusive - 'Unlikely That The League Will Resume Anytime Soon'

Talking to women’s league titleholders KCB Nkumba-A head coach Tonny Lakony for an exclusive interview to ascertain his thoughts about the current state in which volleyball activities in the country have been pegged.

It has been a while since we last had competitive volleyball owing to the impacts of the deadly Coronavirus. The Head of state in a public announcement on Sunday, September 20th, 2020, that sports activities in the country would be given a go-ahead but with a few guidelines to be followed.

We got in touch with coach Tonny Lakony who is the head coach of the women’s league champions, KCB Nkumba-A to find outs his views about volleyball in the country.

How have you been preparing your team in case competitive volleyball resumes?

“Yeah, I have been in touch with the teams throughout this period. The only thing they have been doing is to work out on their own and try to build themselves on their own.”

“We share a few things to help them mentally and physically and morally we keep in touch but for the most part, they are the ones now responsible for themselves.”

“The good news is that some of them are back to the university but those are still not playing because it is not yet okayed but some are back especially the finalists.”

“Of course, it is a challenge they can not have the discipline as you would want to keep in shape.”

Do you see the volleyball league transpiring this year?

“I think it is most unlikely that the league will resume anytime soon because the federation has not gotten the go-ahead basically.”

“It is a bit frustrating because other teams, other disciplines are already training and playing hard. Soccer is already in competition. The playoffs were on.”

“So, for volleyball that is a non-contact sport, I think if we pushed a bit harder, we should have been able to already have started playing, at least tournaments or something.”

“But as for the league, I highly doubt it will happen this year given the circumstances.”

Talking about Volleyball being a low-risk non-contact sport.

“Actually, our government categorized it under low-risk sports. So, by virtue of that, we should really be in-play.”

“Of course, the biggest hindrance that was there was the testing bit of it. You can not ask these clubs to test these players every two weeks.”

“I do not think even the football clubs that have a lot of money in their system can do that.”

“That was the biggest stumbling block. But if we were to go around it, I don’t know how much the federation pushed for them to consider.”

We are hosting the U20s next month and the national team is camping in Insingiro, any comments on that?

“When you have such opportunities, you want to give yourself the best possible chance to compete.”

“The challenge is we have girls who went for under 17 last year, those are the ones who are now going to do under 20.”

“But most of them are candidates right now, and they are in schools in the central.”

“Now if you want to use those girls, because the school cannot allow them to go for two months, 6 weeks camp in Isingiro when others are studying.”

“But if you had the camp in Kampala then you could work out a way that would make it possible to have these girls come for training maybe twice or three times a week.”

“This is a period when the Indoor is free idle, it’s only FUBA using it. What is it that our federation can not do to ensure that we train from the Indoor.”

“One week at the indoor is nothing. Even if it was two months, it would not be enough, but it would be something.”

What are you doing to help the team in Isingiro since you are far away?

“When the girls go to Isingiro, any technical supports that other coaches can come and ship in to help is not possible.”

“We can only give them moral support. Even the well-wishers who could have come and given a box of water but it very far so, it goes under the carpet like that.”

“And even the press and media, it is hard because you want to publicise this, let the public know.”

What do you have to say for Salma Kairungi after her assignment as the manager for the U20 ladies?

“She is going to help, it will be a boost for the team, she is good with people, but it also comes very late.”

“When they were announcing this, they would have invited her a long time ago.”

“She is going to help the team, she is going to do a lot, it is going to be a very big boost for the team, and it will offload a lot of things from the coaches.”

Coach Tonny Lakony believes that we need to take advantage of opportunities like this when we host continental games and also mentioned that he will most likely travel to Isingiro to join KCB Nkymba-A manger to provide support to the U20 ladies.

We also asked him what we should expect from KCB Nkumba-A come next season and this is what he said.

“Well it is going to be challenging for everyone, we do not know how the teams come back but we have been planning and we will see how it goes.”

“We will still come back, of course, competitive, we are still very ambitious. We will make sure that we achieve the goals that we set out to achieve this year.”

“Our plans going forward especially the long term plans are still in place. We will not deviate from those, to compete at a very high level and go ahead and professionalize the team.”

KCB Nkumba-A are holders of the women’s league title. Contention for the title is long overdue but following the current global crisis, it all a waiting game.

2021 Afrobasket Qualifiers: Kenya Morans and Lions of Senegal to open the Kigali window.

Kenya Morans and Lions of Senegal to clash in the first match of the Kigali window.

Following the approval of Kigali City to host the AfroBasket Qualifiers group A, B and D, Kenya Basketball National team, Morans will face the Senegal Lions on the opening day, Wednesday, November 25, 2020.

Kenya had to pass through pre-qualifiers and they recorded five wins out of five games against Burundi, South Sudan, Tanzania, Eritrea and Somalia before they were drawn in the group of death in Afro Basket 2021 qualifiers. Kenya who ranked 21st in Africa will be up against Angola ranked second, Mozambique 13th and Senegal fourth in Group B, where the top three from the group will make it to the final games in Kigali next year.

Of the 19 players called up by Coach Cliff Owuor, City Oilers Center Mike Makiadi did not appear, however, the foreign-based players including Tyler Okari, Ronny Gundo, Ariel Okall, Desmond Owili and Patriots’ Tom Wamukota have all been called in this team dominated by local-based players. Robert Nyakundi is likely to miss out this qualifier due to personal commitment mentioned Coach Owuor.

Coach Owuor, who was with the APR BBC in Rwanda for more than 10 years, thinks that his good relationship with the Rwandan people and the fact that he has Patriots’ Wamukota and coach Ben Oluoch in the squad will give him the support from the local fans. However, no competent authority has announced that fans will be allowed to attend those games that will be played at Kigali Arena.

Kenya Morans will have a serious challenge in this group since the Lions have called all great players from Europe and the USA. A list of 25 pre-selected Lions for the November window by the head coach Boniface Ndong include Maurice Ndour, former New York Knicks Power Forward who currently plays for Rytas Vilnius in Lithuania. Boston Celtic Center Tacko Fall (2.26 m and the tallest player in NBA) and Memphis Grizzlies Power Forward/Center, Gorgui Dieng has been called too. Former Houston Rockets Guard Xane D’Almeida will not participate in this window while Utah Jazz Power Forward, Georges Niang, an American-Senegalese and long-anticipated to join the Senegal National team, has been called too. Niang’s father was born and raised in Senegal.

On the other side, Mozambique summoned a 16 man roster dominated by a big number of the champions Ferroviário de Maputo with 11 players.

In Angola, they are still focusing on the election of the federation’s president scheduled this month. The head coach Will Voigt has not yet announced his roster to travel to Kigali and It was rumoured that they would like to send Petro de Luanda (who is preparing for the BAL games scheduled for December) to represent the country with the national team colours given that the other teams have not yet started open training. However, Petro assured that they had not yet received a request from the federation in this regard. Regardless of this situation, Angola is a Basketball Nation with experienced players like the captain Carlos Morais, Yannick Moreira, Eduardo Mingas and a young generation of Silvio da Suza, Gerson Domingos and Bruno Fernando who currently plays for Atalanta Hawks.
