Rwanda Stuns Nigeria, but AFCON Dream Slips Away.

AFCON
Rwanda’s historic 2-1 win over Nigeria ends in heartbreak as they fail to qualify for the 2025 AFCON due to goal difference, following the concurrent goalless draw between Libya and Benin.

Rwanda’s 2025 AFCON qualification campaign concluded on November 18 with mixed emotions.

The Torsten Spittler-coached side defeated Nigeria 2-1 in Uyo State to conclude the campaign in third place with 8 points, the same as second-placed Benin. However, Benin had a superior goal difference compared to the Amavubi, securing second place.

The first 45 minutes ended in a stalemate, and the Super Eagles broke the deadlock 14 minutes after the break when substitute Samuel Chukwueze scored a stunning solo goal, beating four Rwandan defenders.

Rwandan goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwali sustained an injury a few minutes after the goal and was replaced by Clement Twizere Buhake. At the same time, Spittler introduced Jojea Kwizera and Samuel Gueulette, who completely changed the game.

Kwizera set up Ange Jimmy Mutsinzi in the 72nd minute to level the score, boosting the morale of Djihad Bizimana and his teammates as they pushed for the winner.

In the 75th minute, the in-form striker Innocent Nshuti netted the second goal, capitalizing on a precise pass from Emmanuel Imanishimwe on the left flank.

With the 2-1 lead, Rwanda needed Libya to beat Benin in Tripoli to secure second place. However, the teams ended in a goalless draw, which favored Benin.

Nigeria finished Group D in pole position with 11 points, followed by Benin with 8 points, the same as Rwanda. But with a better head-to-head record, Benin claimed second place, having beaten Rwanda 3-0 in the first leg, while Rwanda won 2-1 in the return leg.

Both teams had 3 points in head-to-head results, but Benin had a superior goal difference in those two encounters.

Rwandan striker Innocent Nshuti (t-shirt #19) finished the 2025 AFCON qualifiers with 3 goals, having scored against all the group’s opponents.

Rwanda has not participated in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) since 2004, but they have never come closer than this year.

The focus now shifts to the World Cup qualifiers. Rwanda leads Group C, which includes Nigeria and Benin—two teams that denied Rwanda a spot in the AFCON—along with South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho.

The 2025 Rwanda Basketball League will tip off on January 24.

Rwanda Basketball League
The FERWABA General Assembly convened on Saturday, November 16, and officially confirmed that the Rwanda Basketball League (RBL) will commence on January 24, 2025.

The General Assembly of Basketball in Rwanda gathered on Saturday at the Park Inn hotel to review the activities of 2024 and plan for the year ahead.

The meeting also saw the admission of new members, including Kigali Elite, the Christian Basketball Team, and the Azomco Women Basketball Club.

The assembly confirmed that the regular basketball competitions will proceed as scheduled in the calendar for the season, with no significant changes to the rules, especially concerning player eligibility.

The age limit in the Second Division has been lifted, making it open to all players. Additionally, a new competition for players under 21 will be introduced.

Meanwhile, the Rwanda Cup will be held for the second time, with top-tier teams allowed to field players from their Second Division-affiliated teams to offer them more playing opportunities.

Another key decision from the meeting was setting the date for the election of a new committee on December 21, 2024. Désiré Mugwiza, who has led the federation for 12 years, will be eligible to continue in his role after the assembly removed the term limit.

At the conclusion of the General Assembly, the press interviewed FERWABA President Mr. Désiré Mugwiza, who also chaired the meeting, about the progress of transforming the Rwanda Basketball League into a professional league, as outlined in a key resolution from the previous year’s assembly.

“We discussed the matter, but there are still aspects that need improvement. We’ve agreed to organize a retreat before the league begins to find better ways to structure the championship. However, the RBL will not be a fully professional league for the upcoming season.” Said FERWABA President.

The Rwanda Basketball League will begin on January 24, with 10 men’s teams, including newly promoted Azomco and Flames, who will replace the relegated Inspired Generations and Titans.

Azomco Women Basketball Club will compete in the women’s category for the first time, with the league expected to feature 11 teams.

Rwanda’s AFCON Hopes Fade with Loss to Libya

AFCON
Amavubi’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) ambitions took a major blow as they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Libya in front of a full crowd at Amahoro Stadium.

November 14th will be remembered as the day Rwanda endured its first defeat in a match played at the newly renovated Amahoro Stadium.

Amavubi hosted Libya’s Mediterranean Knights in a must-win match that could have boosted their ambitions to return to the AFCON for the first time in two decades.

The home team, backed by the crowd, dominated the first half, creating several scoring chances but failing to convert any of them.

Rwanda continued to control possession in the second half but squandered opportunities until Libya’s Fahd Saad Mohamed scored the only goal of the match in the 84th minute.

This left Rwanda with little time to respond, and the defeat severely jeopardized their AFCON qualification hopes.

Rwanda traveled to Uyo, Nigeria, early this morning to take on the Super Eagles in the final match of Group D. And their chances of qualifying for the 2025 AFCON now rely not only on their own performance but also on the result of the Benin-Libya match.

AFCON

Amavubi must beat Nigeria and hope that Libya defeats Benin. Currently, the Torsten Spittler-coached team sits in third place with 5 points, two points behind second-placed Benin and 6 points off leaders Nigeria, who have already secured their AFCON ticket.

Libya’s win has also improved their chances. Although they are at the bottom of the table with 4 points, if they beat Benin in their final match and hope that Nigeria manages at least a draw against Rwanda, they will make it to Morocco next year.

Amavubi’s AFCON Dream on the Line in Must-Win Clash.

The Rwanda men’s national team, Amavubi, will face Libya on November 14 in a must-win match to keep their hopes alive of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals for the first time in 20 years.

Rwanda wants to build on their victory over Benin to continue the long journey of ending a 20-year AFCON drought.

Rwanda last participated in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2004 in Tunisia. Since then, the Amavubi have never been in a stronger position than they are now, to make a return to Africa’s top football tournament.

The Rwandan fans are anticipating the Amavubi’s match against the Mediterranean Knights, as the team have yet to experience a home defeat at the new Amahoro Stadium.

In the pre-match press conference, Djihad Bizimana urged Rwandans to support the team in their final home game and vowed to give their best on the field to make the fans proud.

“We urge Rwandans to come out and support us, as this is our final home match of the campaign.”He told the media.

Bizimana added, “The energy from the crowd has motivated us in previous matches, and we expect them to turn out in large numbers. We promise to make them proud.”

Coach Frank Torsten Spittler stated that the team is in high spirits and ready to build on their victory in the previous match.

“The situation is good, especially after we won our last match, and everyone is healthy.” Torsten noted. “We are ready for the challenge tomorrow.”

The match will take place this Wednesday at Amahoro Stadium, kicking off at 6 p.m. local time. After that, the team will fly to Nigeria for the final group game on November 18.

Rwanda is third in Group D with 5 points, trailing Nigeria (10 points) and Benin (6 points), while Libya is last with 1 point.

A win over Libya, combined with a Nigeria win against Benin, would elevate Amavubi to second place before the final game in Uyo against super eagles.

However, they must fight for a strong result against Nigeria in their final match; otherwise, Rwanda’s chances will depend not only on their own performance but also on the outcome of the Benin-Libya match, as only the top two teams in the group will qualify for the 2025 AFCON.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the 35th edition, will be held in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, due to the scheduling of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in the summer.

Rwanda Volleyball National League Returns for Round 3 Action.

Rwanda Volleyball National League
The Rwanda Volleyball National League reaches new heights in Round 3 as games move outside Kigali for the first time this season.

Gisagara and Huye will host Round 3 of the first phase of the Rwanda Volleyball National League, set to begin on Friday, November 15, with Kepler facing APR in both the men’s and women’s categories.

The indoor games were temporarily halted for the Beach Volleyball National Tour, but action resumes with new excitement as the unbeaten Police teams aim to maintain their top standings.

The undefeated Police Women’s Volleyball Club is looking to extend their winning streak with a matchup against Wisdom on Saturday at Gisagara Gymnasium. Meanwhile, the men’s team will play two games—against IPRC Ngoma on Saturday and Gisagara on Sunday.

The game against Gisagara at their home gymnasium will be a tough challenge for the top spot as Yakan Lawrence’s team seeks redemption after their previous loss to EAUR.

With most of the games taking place in Gisagara, the league’s new “giant killers,” EAUR, will face REG in another tough fixture that will test their readiness for the season.

EAUR shocked Gisagara in Round 2 to maintain their flawless record, and the Vincent Dusabimana-coached side is likely to complicate the race for playoff spots in what is expected to be an intensely competitive battle.

The volleyball fans outside Kigali will, for the first time, enjoy the games, especially in the Southern Province, where spectators will witness the 2024-25 league rivalry in full swing. With many teams gearing up for intense competition, the battle for playoff spots is sure to be fierce.

The Police teams currently lead the standings, with EAUR closely following in the men’s category.

Rutsiro Keeps APR at Bay in 0-0 Stalemate.

APR
APR FC and Rutsiro shared the spoils at KPS in a rescheduled Matchday 1 fixture of the RPL.
Rutsiro held APR FC to a goalless draw at Kigali Pelé Stadium in a rescheduled Matchday 1 fixture of the Rwanda Premier League.

The defending champions suffered another 0-0 setback on Sunday, November 10, and now trail their rivals by 12 points in the Rwanda Premier League standings.

The army team has postponed several fixtures this season due to their involvement in continental club competitions

The league originally scheduled the APR vs. Rutsiro match for August 28, 2024, as their opening game of the 2024-25 RPL season.

Before this encounter, Rutsiro, as an underdog, had never taken a single point from any of their previous matches against APR.

This goalless draw marked APR’s second 0-0 result of the season against a Rubavu-based club, having also drawn 0-0 with Etincelles at Umuganda in their league opener.

The result does not favor Darko Novic’s team in their pursuit of high-flying Rayon Sports, who are on a six-match winning streak. APR now trails their rivals and league leaders by 12 points, although they still have three games in hand compared to Rayon Sports.

With eight points from five matches, the Rwanda’s most decorated club sits in 11th place, one point behind 10th-placed Rutsiro.

Rayon Sports will continue to lead the standings until the league resumes after the international break

Fall Ngagne’s Goal Secures Rayon Sports Victory Over Etincelles.

Fall Ngagne
Fall Ngagne’s lone strike in the second half propelled Rayon Sports to edge past Etincelles, securing their sixth consecutive win and regaining the top spot in the Rwanda Premier League.

Rayon Sports beat Etincelles 1-0 on Saturday, November 9, thanks to Senegalese attacker Fall Ngagne. The victory marks their sixth consecutive win without conceding a single goal.

After a goalless first half, Azi Bassane came on for Charles Bbaale, adding pace and rhythm to the left flank, which caused problems for Etincelles’ defense.

Adama Bakayoko also replaced Hadji Iraguha, and the young Malian left-footed player assisted Fall Ngagne in the 67th minute to give the Blues a 1-0 lead, which they held until the final whistle. The goal was Ngagne’s third of the season.

Etincelles had an opportunity to equalize when Soumaila Moro’s strike was flagged offside, though video footage later revealed that the assistant referee had made an error.

Rayon Sports have now played eight matches in the 2024-25 Rwanda Premier League season, keeping clean sheets in seven of them.

With 20 points from 8 matches, Rayon Sports return to the top of the table with a game in hand. Gorilla are in second with 18 points, followed by Police with 15 points and AS Kigali with 14 points.

Sunday’s action will feature a double-header at KPS, with APR facing Rutsiro at 3 PM, followed by AS Kigali’s clash with Police at 6 PM.

The league will pause for international fixtures after these matches.

APR Shakes off Setback, beat Vision FC  to Return to Winning Ways

APR
APR's Mamadou Sy in Action During Matchday 9 Against Vision FC at KPS
APR Football Club bounced back from a forfeit to defeat Vision FC 2-0 in the Rwanda Premier League, with Mamadou Sy scoring both goals from the penalty spot.

APR dominated Vision FC on Thursday, November 7, at KPS to claim three points in the Rwanda Premier League Matchday 9.

Mamadou Sy converted a penalty kick 10 minutes after kickoff to give the army team an early lead and the confidence to control possession for much of the game.

With nearly the entire RDF Etat Major present, including CDS Gen. Mubarakh MUGANGA, the black and whites continued to dictate the tempo of the match, though they did not rush their attacking play, ending the first half with a 1-0 lead.

Five minutes into the second half, right-back Jean Gilbert Byiringiro won APR’s second penalty, which was once again converted by Mamadou Sy.

As with the first penalty, referee Eric Dushimimana booked Vision FC players for protesting. Goalkeeper James Bienvenue Désiré and defender Stephen Bonney were both cautioned.

With a 2-0 lead, APR’s Darko Novic began making substitutions, giving playing time to several players, including Froduard Mugiraneza, who has rarely featured this season.

The two-goal win lifted APR to 13th place with 7 points. They will face Rutsiro in a rescheduled match on November 10.

Elsewhere in Huye, a 10-man Mukura defeated Police FC 2-0 thanks to goals from Boateng Mensah Agyenim and Bonheur Sunzu. The latter was sent off for a second yellow card after removing his shirt to celebrate his goal, despite already being booked.

The league action resumes on Saturday, with Rayon Sports taking on Etincelles at KPS.

APR FC forfeits their RPL Matchday 8 fixture against Gorilla FC.

APR FC was sanctioned for fielding seven foreign players against Gorilla FC on Matchday 8, exceeding the six-player limit established by the Rwanda Premier League (RPL) rules.

Following the goalless draw on RPL Matchday 8 at Kigali Pele Stadium, Gorilla FC promptly lodged a complaint with the local football governing body (FERWAFA), accusing APR FC of breaching Article 8.2 of the rules and regulations for FERWAFA-organized competitions.

On Wednesday, the Rwanda Premier League board announced that the FERWAFA Competitions Commission had decided to forfeit APR FC’s Matchday 8 game against Gorilla FC, played on November 3, 2024, due to APR FC fielding more foreign players than the league’s regulation limit.

The article states that teams are allowed to list up to 10 foreign players on their team sheet but are restricted to fielding no more than six foreign players on the pitch at any given time.

Hence, Gorilla FC won the match 3-0 against APR FC, the defending champions, who were also fined 100,000 RWF.

The FA’s decision was announced after the team decided to dismiss manager Capt. (Rtd.) Eric Ntazinda and reappoint Maj. Elias Kavuna.

The forfeit has altered the RPL standings, with Gorilla FC moving ahead of Rayon Sports to claim the top spot.

APR FC is currently in 15th place with 4 points from 3 matches but will have the chance to climb out of the relegation zone today, Nov. 7, when they face Vision FC.

Rayon Sports Beat Musanze 1-0 to Move to the Top of the RPL Table

RPL
Charles Bbaale’s second-half lone goal secured a victory for Rayon Sports over Musanze in their Rwanda Premier League (RPL) matchday 9 clash and sent them to the top of the table.

The Blues have on this Wednesday, November 6, triumphed 1-0 away to Musanze, bringing their total points to 17 and extending their winning streak to five matches.

A solitary goal in the 50th minute by Ugandan forward Charles Bbaale was enough to separate the sides at Ubworoherane, marking Rayon’s third consecutive away victory.

Bbaale has become a key player in crucial moments, particularly in away matches, as he did in September when he scored against Gasogi at Amahoro.

Rayon Sports, under Robertinho this season, drew their first two matches against Marines and Amagaju before going on a five-match undefeated run, which included a 4-0 win over rivals Kiyovu, taking them to the top of the table.

Rayon Sports will host Etincelles in a rescheduled match on November 11 at KPS, before the international break.

Other RPL Matchday 9 Results:

  • As Kigali 1-2 Marine FC (Emmanuel Okwi | Ebenezer Niyigena, Mubaraka Nizeyimana)
  • Muhazi United 3-0 Amagaju (Babuwa Samson, Joseph Sackey, Ibrahim Abdul Amini)
  • Bugesera 0-0 Gorilla FC
  • Etincelles 0-0 Rutsiro FC
