Three-time African champions Nigeria to play friendly games against Cote d’Ivoire and Tunisia says the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Nigeria will contend with Sierra Leone in two qualifying matches for the 2021 Cup of Nations scheduled for November. The matches were to have been played in March but were rescheduled due to COVID-19. Nigeria is in the lead of their qualifying group, including Benin, Lesotho and Sierra Leone, for the continental tournament, to be played in 2022 in Cameroon.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Confederation of African Football (CAF) made the decision to push the games to January 2022. The 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will be held in Cameroon with Women’s Africa Cup of Nations cancelled.

 

Mukura VS parted ways with coach Tony Hernandez.

The Spaniard, who has been coaching this club since the month of October last year, has parted ways with the club.

In a letter to the management of the Mukura VS, he informed them that he has resigned from his coaching duties in the Huye district based team for personal reasons. Yakan Lawrence is back in Gisagara Volleyball Club

Rwanda national volleyball team player Yakan Guma Lawrence has signed a two-year contract with Gisagara Volleyball club after nearly five years with Japanese side Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler.

This is not the first time he is going to play for Gisagara VC as he helped them in the 2019 Genocide Memorial Tournament and before the new season of 2019/2020 begun, it was announced by the team management that he will play for them even though Yakan ended up returning to Japan.

Yakan is currently the longest serving player in the men’s senior national team and had previously played for Uganda’s Sport-s, Kigali VC (Rwanda), APR VC (Rwanda), Etoile Sportif (Algeria), Palandoken Belediye (Turkey) and Oita Miyoshi weisse adler

Henry Mwinuka has been appointed as assistant coach of the Rwanda Basketball National senior team

In a press release, Rwanda Basketball Federation announced that Henry Mwinuka, a Tanzanian coach, has been named as the first assistant coach in the men’s national team.

The current REG BBC coach has replaced Maxime Mwiseneza and no other changes have been made with the head coach or the second assistant coach. The team will continue to be led by Vladimir Bosnjak as a head coach with Henry Mwinuka and Aimée Karim Nkusi the first and second assistant coaches.

These changes have no purpose other than to add Henry Mwinuka’s experience to the technical staff as Rwanda prepares for FIBA Afrobasket 2021. These preparations for the team will begin with the Qualifiers expected in November 2020 for Rwanda to host Group D ( Nigeria, Mali, Rwanda and Algeria).

As a reminder, coach Henry Mwinuka won 3 Rwandan league titles with Patriots.

2020/21 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup Calendar Released.

Administrative body for African football, CAF has revealed the calendar for the interclub 2020/21 season. Member Associations (MA) are requested to register their representatives on the CAF Content Management System (CMS) guided by the following scenarios posted on the CAF official website.

Vipers SC for Champions League and KCCA for Confederation Cup are the representatives from Uganda. 2019/20 league titleholders Vipers SC were crowned when the league was ended due to COVID-19 thus a spot in the CAF Champions League qualifiers with the latter earning a ticket for the CAF Confederation Cup after a nomination from the FUFA committee.

Twelve MA’s, including Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, DR Congo, Algeria, South Africa, Zambia, Nigeria, Guinea, Angola, Sudan and Libya in this order based on rankings posted on the CAF official website are entitled to two representing teams in both competitions whereas others will only engage one.

Yanga SC defeated Aigle Noir in a friendly match on Sunday

51 minutes was just enough for Ghanaian striker Micheal Sarpong after five months off the pitch to start the scoring counter and new winning streak for his new side Yanga Africans that is based in Dar-es-Salaam.

The 18-year-old was unveiled in style at the club home grounds at Lugogo, arriving in a personalized license plate vehicle. Talking to KCCA media, Ayella stated, “I am very grateful for the promotion, it is a dream come true and it has been hard work to reach here. I have put much effort to get this chance. KCCA FC coach Mike Mutebi has expressed confidence in the young player saying, “We have prepared them (Junior team players) to have confidence, they are young but they believe in themselves. He is a good addition, the game needs energetic players who can run 90 minutes nonstop and he will add something to the team. We lost creativity when Okello departed, we looked flat and we hope to look better next season”

Zambian league runner up and Ndola based team Forest Rangers want to strengthen their defense sector.

Fole Malembe (Forest Rangers) will be the Zambia flagbearer in the CAF Champions League and they are looking for the services of Rwandan defender Soter Kayumba who currently plays for Rayon Sports.

Kayumba, 27, arrived in Rayon Sports from AS Leopards and had previously played for Sofapaka and AS Kigali. He is a Rwandan national team player since 2017 playing as a central defender and has the ability to play on the back side.

Forest Rangers finished second in the 2019/2020 season behind Nkana on goal difference. The last match against Zanaco was a must win game to secure their second Champions  title since 2014, unfortunately it ended in a goalless draw.

FIFA U17 World cup qualifiers – Uganda National Team U17 Girls Receive FUFA Funds Ahead Of Tie With Cameroon

FUFA has extended financial support to the Uganda U17 Girls’ national team players.  Ahmed Hussein, the FUFA Communications Director, confirmed that a total of 35 players will receive $100 each.

‘FUFA will release funds to 35 players in the U17 Girls’ national team and each player will receive $100 to aid them in personal training as they prepare for the final stage of the FIFA U17 World cup qualifiers with Cameroon. The coaches have been in constant engagement with the players, sharing training manuals as we wait for Government to lift the lockdown on sports activities’ noted Hussein

‘We believe this financial facilitation will help the players to continue with personal training as we work around plans to get the team to camp in preparation for the matches against Cameroon. FUFA is ready to support the team so that we realize our target of qualifying to the 2021 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in India’ added Hussein.

Uganda will face Cameroon in the final qualifying round of the 2021 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers with the first leg in Kampala slated to take place between 31st October- 2nd November 2020 and a return leg a fortnight later.

To reach this stage, Uganda eliminated Ethiopia and Tanzania in the preliminary and first-round respectively.

The beneficiaries of this financial support are players from the previous U17 Squads plus six new faces named by head coach Ayub Khalifa.

The new faces include Gift Nasasira, Winnie Kwatira, Devine Mirembe, Aucho Kagongo, Ritah Mushimire and Kamuyati Naigaga.

AfroBasket 2021: Preparations in full swing

As the world is threatened by the COVID-19 pandemic, preparations for the FIBA ​​Afrobasket 2021 continue with virtual meetings.

According to the FIBA ​​website, the Rwanda Basketball Federation president Desire Mugwiza said that Rwanda is concerned about organizing a tournament that will always be remembered.

FIBA Afrobasket is the biggest tournament on the continent in basketball, with Kigali hosting the tournament in 2021. This is the second time the East African region will host the event since Kenya hosted the 1993 tournament.

Rwanda as a country accustomed to hosting basketball competitions plans to take advantage of this great opportunity to create a lasting and exciting event that attracts sports tourism through basketball.

In a lengthy interview with FIBA, Desire Mugwiza revealed the government’s role in the preparations for the tournament, saying, “The country has put all its efforts into mobilizing the required resources to host the AfroBasket. The Rwandan leadership recognizes the importance and the opportunity of hosting such a competition. They have provided full support and the Ministry of Sports leadership is fully supportive of providing all the required resources to make this event a success. ”

With desirable experience having hosted several continental tournaments in the past including the 2009 FIBA ​​Africa Champions Cup, the Rwanda Basketball Federation is building on that to devise ways of making this an unforgettable event for the participating teams and the fans from across the continent.
“Every time we are given an opportunity to host a basketball tournament as the federation, we consider it as an opportunity to use basketball as a tool to transform the Rwandan community while connecting the positive economic and social momentum to leave a legacy.” Mugwiza explained.
