Rayon Sports advance to the Rwanda Peace Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 victory over Vision FC at Kigali Pelé Stadium, sealing a 5-1 aggregate win.
Tuesday, February 20, the blues reached the Peace Cup semifinals after comfortably brushing aside the challenge of Nyamirambo-based Vision FC, with Paul Gomis scoring for the first time in a Rayon Sports jersey.
Rayon Sports, the Peace Cup defending champions, entered the second leg with an advantage of 2 goals, but they did not take it for granted as Julien Mette did not change his lineup substantially.
It took the Blues 12 minutes to turn a comfortable start into the opening goal, with Felix Ndekwe Bavakure, a former Vision FC player, on target to hurt his hometown team.
Felix Ndekwe and Elie Ganijuru put Julien Mette’s side two up early in the first half, with Vision FC struggling to keep up with the pace of top-tier play. However, Jean Claude Harerimana scored for Vision before the halftime, restoring hope for a comeback in the second half.
Rayons slowed their play in the second half until substitute Arsene Tuyisenge drew a penalty in the dying minutes. A golden opportunity for Paul Gomis to score his first goal in Rayon Sports. He makes the score 3-1.
Julien Mette had an easy win despite the fact that his first-choice goalkeeper, Khadime Ndiaye, was injured in the second half. Further medical assessments are pending to determine how serious the injury is.
The 5-1 aggregate victory also keeps the blues firmly on course for the double, they are now second in the league table after a five-game winning streak.
Vision FC’s 2024 Peace Cup journey has come to an end, and the focus has to shift to their 2nd Division league battle, where they are ranked second behind Espoir in Group B. They are among the favorites to advance to the playoffs and compete for a two-promotion place.
Rayon Sports must wait 24 hours to find their semi-final opponent. They will face the winner of Mukura versus Bugesera.
