REG BBC become first team to clinch playoff spot in 2023 BAL season

Rwanda Energy Group, REG BBC Team beat AS Douanes and became the First team in Season 3 to book their spot into the Basketball Africa League playoffs following their 3-out-of-3 record in the Sahara Conference.

The Rwanda Basketball League champions, REG BBC became the first team to clinch a spot in the 2023 BAL Playoffs with a 69-55 win over AS Douanes on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at Dakar Arena.

In a battle dominated by REG, the 2023 Sahara Conference hosts were outscored by not only matching the 3-point output, but their other options were also limited.

AS Douanes shoot 15-52 into the paint and 4-28 from behind the arc while their opponents were shooting 15-33 2P and making 11-33 3P shots.

Terrel Stoglin was held to 0 points for the first time in BAL history. The American forward is the all-time leading scorer in the league. Limiting him to scoring was key to certainly ensuring REG’s victory.

Jean Jacques Wilson Nshobozwabyosenumukiza provided his usual scoring with 14 points, while Dieudonné Ndizeye added 13. AS Douanes has dropped two straight games.

Basketball Africa League will provide a $5,000 donation to club Rafiki, an organization that promotes youth development through sports, on behalf of Nshobozwabyosenumukiza.

Following a win against the Falcons and ABC Fighters, REG became the first team to clinch a spot in the 2023 BAL playoffs slated in May 2023 in Kigali, Rwanda.

This marks REG’s second consecutive postseason berth in Basketball Africa League. Last season, they got eliminated in the quarterfinals by Cameroon’s FAP.
