REG Women BBC lift the 2020/2021 BKBNL trophy

Former Ubumwe Basketball Club, now REG Women BBC won Rwanda’s Bank of Kigali Basketball National League this Sunday after beating rival The Hoops Rwanda 50-44 in the third and deciding game to win the playoff finals 2-1.

Having lost three games in the regular season, REG kept their calm all through the Playoffs and swiftly won the title for the third time. They last won the championship in 2016 as Ubumwe.

This Sunday, in a low scoring total, REG Women BBC beat the defending champions, The Hoops Rwanda 50-44 (13-08, 15-13, 09-10, 13-13) in the best of 3 finals of the BKBNL at Kigali Arena to end the long wait of 5 years without a League title.

Nyota Muganza led the winners with 20 points, Rose Akon followed with 18 points. Muganza grabbed 34 rebounds too including 14 offensive rebounds. Surely, The Hoops struggled to find ways to stop her while Chantal Utamuliza just played a really solid defence against The Hoops’ leading scorer, Rosine Micomyiza.

Former UCU Lady Canon player, Akon Rose Paul Macuei has been named the Most Valuable Player in the 2020/2021 Bank of Kigali Basketball National League. The South Sudanese brought a lot of offensive firepower to the team as she finished league top scorer.

Henriette Uwimpuhwe from Groupe Scolaire Marie Reine, won the most Improved Player award. Henriette, currently in secondary school, finished the regular season top scorer however, her team didn’t make the playoff slot.

In the other individual awards, Rose Akon collected the top scorer award for the 2020/2021 season too. The Hoops Center, Feza Ebengo received the award as the best defender while APR’s Laurence Imanizabayo was crowned the best three-point shooter of the season.

REG Women BBC and The Hoops Rwanda will represent Rwanda in the Zone V championship in a yet to be confirmed country, venue and dates.
