Rwanda’s 2nd division sides Rutsiro FC and Gorilla FC win promotion to play in Premier League come next season.
Rutsiro FC and Gorilla FC got a historical promotion in Rwanda’s top tier league. This comes after the two teams performed well in the semi-finals on Wednesday, November 18, 2020.
In the semi-finals, which took place at Kigali Stadium today, no goals were scored in either match, all the games finished with penalty shootouts, both teams won the promotion to the Premier League for the first time. In particular, the Gorilla FC team that was established in 2019 after the purchase of SEC Academy.
In the first game, Rutsiro drew with Vision FC 0-0, they proceeded to the penalties, Rutsiro FC won 7-6. Another action-packed semifinal followed this match between Etoile de l’est and Gorilla FC. Both teams had an impressive run this season and there is no doubt they were both favorites to get promotions together. However, according to the schedule they had to face each other in the semifinal. After the goalless draw in regular time, Gorilla FC edged Etoile de l’est on penalty shoutout (4-3) to get the maiden promotion. Etoile de l’est missed out another opportunity to play in the Premier league they last played in 1998/1999 season.
On Saturday, November 21, 2020, Gorilla FC and Rutsiro FC will lock horns for the final of the Rwanda 2nd Division League 2019/2020 season.
