Rwanda Premier League is set to return under new format

Today at the headquarters of the Rwanda Football Association, Ferwafa, a meeting was held between the first division teams and the FERWAFA Executive Committee. In the meeting, it was agreed that the league should be played in just two months under the tournament format.

Following that the Rwanda Premier league was halted at the third round on December 11th, 2020 by the Ministry of Sports citing that the measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 were not properly followed, it is now confirmed that the league will restart on May 1st, 2021 under tournament format, starting with group stage games. June 29th, 2021 is the date when the league title holder will decided.

The tournament will be played in four groups, with defending champions, APR FC heading the Group A. In the group stages, the teams will face each other in the first and second leg matches and then the top two teams will advance to the next round.

After the group stages, the advanced teams will face each other in a single game then the top two teams, a winner and a runner up will represent the country in CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup respectively.

The teams that will not make out of the group stages will battle to avoid relegation.

This Championship is expected to kick off with a new name. Following the agreements signed between Rwanda FA and the local brewer and soft beverage company, Bralirwa who took the naming rights under its brand Primus. The league will be named Primus National League.

Group A: APR FC, AS Muhanga, Gorilla FC, Bugesera FC
Group B: Rayon Sports FC, SC Kiyovu, Gasogi United, Rutsiro FC
Group C: Police FC, AS Kigali, Musanze FC, Etincelles FC
Group D: Mukura VS, Marines FC, Sunrice FC, Espoir FC
