Former Berco Stars and APR BBC point guard, Sandra Kantore has joined Ubumwe BBC after eight-year with the army side, APR WBBC.

Sandra Kantore, one of the longest-serving APR Women BBC players, has made her way to Ubumwe BBC as the head coach of this team has confirmed it to Ground-sports.

“Yeah, It is true. Sandra Kantore is now our player. We have finalized all the details,” said coach Esperance Mukaneza.

Kantore, the 2018-2019 Basketball Player of the Year, suffered an injury in her left knee, she has been sidelined for nearly a year and a half but according to her new coach, she recovered and she is ready to deliver on court.

“Sandra started pre-season training really well and I think now she is fit. We should have used her in these pre-season games but she told us that there is something she had not yet settled with her former team. So, she will start playing for us in the upcoming championship games we are preparing for,” she added.

Asked if there will be more signings before BKBNL 2021 Tipoff, coach Mukaneza said they still need at least one more player. “We want another center, but as for the Rwandans who have that ability, they have contracts in their teams, we will probably be looking for a solution from abroad. It is even possible that we start the championship without the new addition needed, but in the mid-season, we can add more players as the rules allow,” the coach added.

“We were hoping Sarah Ageno would recover soon and play for us but her injury was serious and we can not count on her this season. We are partnering with her National team management, the Gazelles of Uganda in her treatment.”

The new signing, Sandra Kantore, who is nicknamed ‘Do Me’ carries Rwandan identification documents despite representing Burundi at the International level. She was considered as a top point guard in the local women’s league before she had an injury that kept her off the court for more than a year and a half.

BKBNL 2021 season tipoff date is yet to be announced. Whether it will start before or after the BAL games scheduled between 16 and 30 May 2021. Last season, Ubumwe finished third behind the champions Hoops Rwanda and the finalists IPRC Huye.
