2021 Afrobasket Qualifiers: South Sudan has been handed a chance to complete the Group D
Following the decision by Algeria National team to withdraw from the Afrobasket Qualifiers window 1 scheduled in Rwanda, FIBA Opted to replace Algeria with South Sudan as they came second in the wild cards tournament organized in Cameroon last month.
South Sudan bright stars started in the Preliminary qualifiers held in Nairobi, January 2020. They finished second behind Kenya and lost the opportunity to enter the Groups in Qualifiers. Later in October this year, FIBA Africa organized another mini tournament in Cameroon between 23rd and 25th. South Sudan were given the invitation to this wild card tournament unfortunately, they finished second again and miss out on the opportunity to complete the Group E.
In recent days, Algeria pulled out of Group D due to the COVID 19 constraint to bring the foreign-based players into the country and the local players could not practice therefore through the federation president Rabah Bouarifi, they decided to withdraw. Which gives South Sudan another prospect to complete Group D.
South Sudan will join the hosts Rwanda, Mali and the giants Nigeria. The Bright Stars of South Sudan will play the first game on November 26, 2020, against Nigeria.
