To complete the regular season and show other playoff candidates that they are a force to be reckoned with, UCU ends the undefeated streak of superpower Sport-S.
One would assume that the games had just begun as the National Volleyball League’s 2022/2023 regular season comes to an end. Prior to the match, playoff berths had already been determined, but UCU was out to prove a point to Nsambya base side Sport-S.
A record that has only been attained by a few teams for stance, Nemostars, the S-Team had gone the full regular season without suffering a loss. To put the cherry on top, UCU chose to defeat the Nsambya boys 3–1 at Old Kampala Sports Arena, dashing their aspirations.
Odeke Vincent’s stunning block allowed the Mukono-based University team to score first. Yet Sport-S led and dominated the entire set to win it 25-22 under the direction of coach Benon Mugisha.
At 24-20 and 24-22 in this set, the University boys were down but managed to close the distance, prompting Coach Benon to call two timeouts.
In set 2, the Nsambya boys were in the lead once more until 18:18, when UCU tied and gained the lead, which resulted in the subsequent tying of the set scores. The scores were reversed at the end of the set, favoring UCU 25–22.
Sport-S, who had been considered the match’s favorite to win, learned they had to work harder than they had anticipated at this point. Warren had to intervene to try to shift the mood for his team, but he was unable to do so successfully enough to affect the game’s outcome.
A younger side, UCU went on to win the match 3 – 1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-18).
